Suggestion

One thing that I have always been impressed with, Porsche tends to use suprisingly low spring rates with a tad agressive damper settings to control the chassis, and they have been quite effective.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

Hi everyone. Just saying hi here. I will be ordering a Boxster S or Cayman S in the next week or so when I make up my mind!! A little about me; I am 33. I have raced everything from karts to big cars since I was 15 and I currently instruct for a few different car clubs here in SoCal. I have lusted after a Porsche for a long time and I am finally close to biting the bullet. Steve Kaufman

POST 2Original post

Welcome Steve. I think a Cayman would be more to your liking with its stiffer structure and additional HP.......seems to fit your history a bit better!

POST 3Original post

Welcome Steve! You have a cool bio. I think no matter which car you decide you will have a lot of fun. Tony

POST 4Original post

Steve, Do you still have that MR2 Spyder? If you want the same top-down experience but with more power and control then go the Boxster route, but if you want to push the envelope even more on the track then go with the Cayman. I'm selling my 2005 Boxster S to get a Cayman for precisely that reason, more things I can do with it on the track and more modifications will be available for the Cayman first before the Boxster. Hope that helps! Welcome to the site!

POST 5Original post

I looked your Boxter on the Classifieds. Sweet ride!

POST 6Original post

No I don't. How did you know I had one out of curiousity?

POST 7Original post

I think we have some mutual acquaintances, and I recognized your handle. Good to see you here, wasn't sure if you were still hanging around the MR2 site anymore or not.

POST 8Original post

No longer hanging around Spyderchat. I have been at my350z.com for a few years, but I no longer have the 350Z either. My gutted 350Z with roll cage, race suspenion, race seat/harness, and Toyo DOT-R race tires was on hell of a track car winning in speedventures time trial events almost every time out. I can only hope the Porsches are that much better.

POST 9Original post

I've never been pitted against a stripped out 350Z at the track, but the factory 'track' versions on R-compounds could not keep up with my stock Boxster S on street tires. Was your race suspension a big improvement over the stock 'track' suspension on the 350Z? I've never cared much for the stock 350Z suspension.

POST 10Original post

The stock 350Z suspension pretty much sucks. I replaced it and all was well. The car was more than a match for R compound shod Boxster S's in terms of sheer speed. The Boxster though was a MUCH easier and MUCH more rewarding car to drive. You don't have to wrestle a properly driven Boxster S, but you can't drive a 350Z fast without wrestling it. My 350Z also has a Cusco mechanical LSD and a Cusco lightweight flywheel. It had the Crawford custom intake plenum as well as AEM intake, test pipes, and Borla exhaust. As far as a R compound 350Z not keeping up with a Boxster S on street tires, that's all driver because in reality it should be faster on nearly any track configuration.

POST 11Original post

I neglected to mention this was a new 2005 987 version Boxster S which according to Road and Track is much faster around the track than a 350Z in their sports car testing, but again, I concur it comes down to configuration and driver. Good to hear they have a suspension fix for the 350Z, does it apply to the G35 and FX lines as well?

POST 12Original post

I never got the chance to run against an '05-'06 version S. As far as that R&T test, if they had run that configuration of Buttonwillow in the opposite direction the Z would have done a lot better. The stock Z is a terminally understeering car and super stable through fast corners. Had they run it the other way it could have entered Riverside (high speed banked) corner probably faster and more confident than any car in the test. Same thing going through the S's, but the way they ran it the Z had to come off slow corners where it understeers before entering either of those sections so all it did was accelerate through those sections. I guess that is what happens when you let lawyers design your cars and it's not like it matters because I think the Z has been the best selling 2 seat sportscar for the past 3 years.

POST 13Original post

Hello Everyone: I thought I should tag on to this thread rather than opening a new one. Similar to raceboy, for the past several years I have been going on and off about a Porsche. Boxter never appealed to me as it is a convertible, the 911 is certainly fantastic car, but too big for my taste; so you can imagine my excitment when I heard about the Cayman I have not yet made my decision, but getting close. I participate in many track events as well as autocrosses. One of my enjoyments is chassis setup. I used to own a company in which our focus was competion setups for BMWs and Subaru (what a contrast eh? ). The Cayman certainly will be very interesting for me if I do end up purchasing it with its mid-engine layout and 45/55 weight distribution; I am actually looking quite forward to it. In terms of the 350Z, which is a truly great value, it looks like it should be tremendously competitive in its perspective competition class. However, I have not come across any 350Zs that truly presented a real threat to BMWs, S2000s, or Porsches. I have never driven a well setup 350Z, but I always wondered about it. Any how, hello to everyone and K-man - thank you for seting up this forum this early Cheers,

POST 14Original post

Welcome about FT! (Does that stand for Full Throttle?) /fckeditor/editor/images/smiley/MWPX/teeth_smile.gif

POST 15Original post

Nice to have you here. Well then the problem with the Cayman will probably be the same as the Boxster. It will be the lack of ability to get enough negative Camber into the front wheels. Do you have any experience with Boxster chassis set-up? The 350Z is not much of an autox car, but roadracing is a different animal. 350Z's do well in Grand Am Cup (when they stay together!).

POST 16Original post

FYI you can get plenty of negative camber in the new 987 Boxsters and you could on the old ones provided you went with the ROW suspension. How much negative camber are you wanting?

POST 17Original post

Yes, that is interesting about the 350Z. In Grand AM cup they do well in the higher band of the mid-pack, in autocrosses they are quite weak for some reason. I do not have any experience at all with the 986/987 chassis, some with the 964. The 987 is an intriguing one from my perspective. I do not know if front camber limitations will come in play or not; however, the overall suspension geometry is quite facinating to me. One thing that I have always been impressed with, Porsche tends to use suprisingly low spring rates with a tad agressive damper settings to control the chassis, and they have been quite effective. We will have to wait and see at least until Junuary I guess /fckeditor/editor/images/smiley/MWPX/teeth_smile.gif K-man - Full Throttle sounds good to me /fckeditor/editor/images/smiley/MWPX/teeth_smile.gif It is actually short for Flying Toaster from very long time ago.

POST 18Original post

Amiga Flying Toasters? Wasn't that a video product or was that video toaster?

POST 19Original post

LOL, no; there used to be a screen saver during mid-90s After Dark that included a screen saver version that was toasters with wings flying around /fckeditor/editor/images/smiley/MWPX/wink_smile.gif
