Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.
Discussions that report a fix
1
0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Leading evidence: 'Repair above statement' (1 discussions report resolution; 0 report an unsuccessful attempt). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'advantage' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Repair above statement' (1 discussions). For that action, 1 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. The most frequently reported fix is 'Repair above statement', supported by resolution reports in 1 discussions. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suspected cause
There is probably an advantage to do this at a Porsche dealership.

Suggestion
Thanks for the heads-up, after double checking my math I found my error.

Suggestion
Keep in mind that there is an art to putting on gaskets, and that may explain why some need replacing more than once.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi Ed,
Welcome.
Take a minute to read the buyers guide found on this forum. It will answer many questions.
I have heard PPI from $100 to $600 so do shop around and ask first. There are extra services that can be done at a price (like dme reading)
RMS is a seal, some never leak, some never stop leaking. Porsche made many many cars and what you read about are people problems. Most people don't take time to go on forums and post threads like "my rms isn't leaking today"
Search is your friend. Post potential cars for input. Take your time and do your homework.
Cheers
Ed
Washington State is quite a haul for a little joy ride!
Between vacations and work I think I've gone through one tank of gas the past month. That's okay, when I do drive it daily I put 50 miles on it each day since I'm around 23 miles from the office one way. So I guess it all adds up...I'm just going through a busy time where our business is actually growing. In this economy I guess that's a positive thing!
Yes, 99.99% of them leak, & about 99.9999999% of them also eventually have IMS failure & explode randomly on you. These guys here & myself represent the lucky 0.0000001% who got the "good cars"
By the way, Ed... My RMS isn't leaking today.
LOL
When I purchased my 996 I decided to forgo a PPI at a Porsche dealer and instead employed the services of a fortune teller. We held a sance in the sellers garage with a Ouija board and everything, I pulled out all the stops.. Luckily she didnt see an RMS or IMS failure in the cars future so I went ahead with the purchase. So count me in the 0.0009% of 996 owners who have not experienced these failures.
My only regret is that I didnt ask Madam Crystal Gaze what brand and weight of motor oil I should use.
DreamCarrera... Get your facts straight, I hate when people talk statistics without knowing the facts. You are actually amongst the lucky 0.0000001%, NOT 0.0009%... Lol, just messing with you.
Lol! That's one of my daily prayers, bro. No, seriously.
I'm a Christian dude and have no qualms praying that my car doesn't self destruct.
As to RMS, for what it's worth, I've got a 2001 C4 with it's original RMS and still no leaks. Rock on Yellow Wonder! God, please keep her running strong!
God works in mysterious ways (and not so mysterious ways too!
) I'm definitely an LN Engg fan!
Man, I SOOOO want to take one of Jake's classes on rebuilding the M96. I'm thinking of giving myself a present and flying me out to his shop, setting up in a hotel for a couple days, and taking his class as a vacation. That'd be a cool vacation. I'd take that instead of Maui any day.
BTW, rxjohn, looking at your avitar, did you go to USC? That's where I went to graduate school. Rock on, brother.
Class of 2001 here!!
Back to the OP.
My local dealer charges $300 for PPI.
RMS is no big deal. It's a gasket. Keep in mind that there is an art to putting on gaskets, and that may explain why some need replacing more than once.
Are you being paid by LN? Maybe some disclosures are in order here. God sent us LN - REALLY?[searching for the throw-up icon]
BTW, what will the failure rate be on the LN bearing? Anyone? Apparently rxjohn believes the failure rate will be zero because it was engineered with the help of divine intervention.
I feel Rennlist should change the title of this board from 996 to Random IMS(RMS) Discussions. Moderators are you listening?
Lets see - Rennlists scientific poll shows about 30 IMS failures from a total of ~130,000 cars built.
Quick someone call the New York Times!!!
I sympathize with those who have experienced the failure, but enough is enough.
I have drugs for nausea if you'd like. No, I have no personal interest in LN Engineering other than I'm going to get an IMS upgrade done.
Evidently you lack sense of humor. But that being said, Jake Raby said no failures yet I believe.
Whatever you'd like.
You fail at science. Because there aren't 130,000 car owner responding to the poll.
You should.
I don't think it's enough. I became aware of the IMS failure post my first P-Car purchase. I purchased a Cab fully knowing I'd get an upgrade.
Perhaps it's you that lacks a sense of humor. My "scientific poll" comment was obviously my usual poor attempt at humor. Of course not all 996 owners responded to the poll. That is the exact point of many on here.
BTW, I double checked the poll and there were 22 owners who reported having IMS failure, not the 30 that I previously stated. Who knows how many of these engine failures were blamed on the IMS but were actually something else.
Again, 130,000 996s produced vs. 22 Rennlist reported failures. If the actual number of failures was anywhere close to the 10% that some claim, the number reported in the RL poll would be well into the hundreds or thousands. JMHO , and no I am not a statistician.
Flame Suit On
That's not called humor. It's sarcasm.
More than 22. And that's probably 22 too many.
Like you said, you're not a statistician. So, don't assume there should be more IMS failure reported on RL.
This is hardly "Flamable."
RMS = Rear Main Seal. So it is not a gasket!!
You have radial seals, like the RMS and you have gaskets, like a head gasket or water pump gasket, big difference. There is no real
art
in installing a RMS, cleanliness is next to godliness, other than that, factory tool (or any purpose built tool) is pretty much idiot proof.
Great point 130k cars produced and 22 reports on Rennlist.
When these do break then the owners want to get answers from the internet as well as share the pain. I would be curious what the real number of failure percentages are, especially for 1999 production 996s.
I was one of the lucky 130k I guess. My car was RMS leak proof and no IMS problems, and honestly I was pretty darned happy about it, so is the new owner.
Now not to say other things broke, in fairness....
Like the CD 6disk player, alternator, coolant tank, oil sending sensor, MAF sensors (4), Cam Sensor and the key switch and the window regulators oh and wheel bearings ..you know the normal crap that should fail in a car with only 34k miles
Just had a PPI done during the holidays. ~$200 at a porsche dealership. Included all tests they would do for a CPO and a DME read as a freebie.
It was worth it as it detected a few issues, including the RMS leak with I used to bring the price down to account for future repairs. There is probably an advantage to do this at a Porsche dealership.
Good luck with your search.
