Thought I had seen this topic discussed once before here. Anyway, my question is what is the purpose of using the wheel spacers?? Seems to me that it is widening the track of the car but will it make a big difference in the handling of the car?? Also, seems to be a pretty steep price for them from the factory.
You lower the roll center and of course you get that 'look' of bulging wheels. Don't pay Porsche $500 though. You can get 4 H&R 7mm spacers and longer wheel bolts for about $200.
It also allows you to put wider wheels and tires on the car, thus obtaining more grip assuming a larger contact patch on the pavement. I concur with raceboy, get them aftermarket. One of our sponsors here

sells them, check into their offerings and help support our sponsors! /fckeditor/editor/images/smiley/MWPX/teeth_smile.gif
I don't know if spacers will lower roll center but they will widen track. I put Porsche 5mm spacers on my 986S. They cost me about $360 from dealership plus an hour and half of labor so total about $500. The car looked better but honestly the handling was less crisp, steering response not as good either. Could it be the extra weight? Anyway I'm not getting them for Cayman S.
I would have sold you 4- !/4'' spacers for $20.00 each. It is as simple as taking the wheel off, sliding the thin spacer on to your hub and re-installing the wheel. There is no way that a small spacer such as these can cause any difference in performance. My customers have asked for up to a 4 inch spacer. I think that is a little much, but that is what they wanted. We make up to a 3 ' spacer and customers have stacked a 3 inch spacer and a 1' spacer to equal a 4' spacer. They were happy as hell. Porsche asked us to show them our spacers a few years ago and stated that they would never approve an adapter. Did you notice that they have been promoting adapters ever since the 1997 993? Duh.
