Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi Crew
I bought a 2001 Carrera last fall. It has aftermarket headlights and the seller had no clue what they were - said he bought the car this way.
Im in Canada and DRLs are a requirement. It is an original Canadian car, so it would have had DRLs when it was new.
My problem is that the DRLs in these aftermarket units dont work. I dont know if the units even have DRLs, as I dont know which part of an OEM headlight functions as the DRL?
So in rectifying my situation I thought I would start with at least knowing what OEM DRLs look like when theyre on. Then I could at least start troubleshooting either the wiring or relay, r the other possibilities often mentioned here
So, if someone could provide a pic of what the OEM DRLs look like, I would appreciate it.
Thanks
I'm not sure how the factory DRL function for the 996 works, but I did not think changing out the headlights would have any effect. If you are not able to sort it out then the next easiest option would be this hack:

Thanks guys for responding. It's appreciated.
I may try the hack, but am still curious which lamp(s) in the OEM headlight unit served as the DRL?
Is the fog lights?
Not exactly sure, but these threads might help track down your issue and which lights are illuminated in the DRL circuit:

My 2003 US has the small bulbs as well, they turn on with the first light position on the switch.. I hadn't really thought about it till I was reading this..
I thought DRL was a PWIS item...
Rules in Canada are that theres no controls of any kind where you can turn them off. They have to hardwire to be on whenever the engine is running, so to speak
Im sure with my car being an original Canadian car that the DRLs did operate as required by our regulation. but since my car has aftermarket headlights, I am guessing these units have no DRL lamps built into them.
Thats why I would like to see a pic of a 996 with the DRLs on.
Thank you. Although I appreciate all the other comments, this is what I was looking for.
So this tells me the wiring harness in my car has wires in it that would fire that little lamp. Knowing this I can meter the wiring connector for 12 VDC and go from there as to how I might use that as a power source for some add-on DRLs.
🙏👍
FWIT My 03 996.2 lights up the same with the light switch either off or on, that's to say tail lights and headlights. When I've had a burnt out DRL the replacement bulb was an H6 (or H7 been a while) Forgot to mention car is equipped with the base halogen headlights.
