Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Could be the starter needing a rebuild or just the connections need taking off and cleaning thoroughly and electric grease them.

Thanks Monty - furkled underneath the car and found that so I'll get the wire brush out (disconnect battery first!)

I was very pleased with myself for replacing the Alternator Y cable, with some Youtube help.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Any suggestions on the next variable to try and track down my 996's reluctance to start?
I was very pleased with myself for replacing the Alternator Y cable, with some Youtube help. The old one didn't look in bad nick, but the YT instructor had the same thing and his replacement had his car firing up healthily.
Mine not so much. Still reluctant to turn over, with a fully charged battery...
...where do I look next?
Cheers
New battery. Even if fully charged it might not be in top condition, that fixed mine. I haven’t needed to fit the Y cable I bought.
If that doesn’t work it could be the starter motor. Clean bushes/replace solenoid.
cheers, sorry should have mentioned new battery and alternator went in before the Y cable... and it lives on a battery conditioner.
I've bought a NOCO boost pack so I have more attempts to start it when away from home, but it's a PITA and getting worse.
If you haven't already done so jump it from another vehicle with the engine running , if it's no different it's not the battery.
Could be the starter needing a rebuild or just the connections need taking off and cleaning thoroughly and electric grease them.
Make sure the engine earth strap is good and the connections are clean and bright. It's located OS behind the back wheel.
reluctant to turn over at all, slow and no punch. I give it a few attempts (2,3 or 4 goes) before it 'takes' turns over more typically and starts.
Whan I attach the NOCO pack it acts the same - I'm just reassured that I've got more goes.
I'll check the earth strap cheers... I think a new starter might be on the cards, its 115 thousand miles so I guess things are wearing out.
Have you tried connecting the NOCO positive to the B+ terminal in the engine bay and the negative to the engine block? It would eliminate the ground strap and +12V chassis cable from the starter loop. If it cranks well like that the starter and Y harness are good. You could then move the negative to a chassis ground and that will tell you if the ground strap is dodgy.
If it doesn't crank well with the NOCO on the B+ terminal, move the NOCO positive to the stud on the starter itself (not easy to get to!) to eliminate the Y harness and connections. If it's still not cranking well at this point it's either starter or the engine is stiff to rotate.
