I spoke to them about using a BOSE sub box as part of the install and they politly said "we couldn't recommend a sub box with such small volume, it simply would not complement the rest of the install" (I'm looking at the level 2, but with higher grade components).

I've been an audiophile for 16 years resulting in a home system that has no bass, an amp that chucks out a measly 18 watts and uses antiquated valve technology!

I even still make use of my cassette deck.....people laugh at me when I tell them that, but when they listen..........and when I tell them I wish I had a decent record player because they sound much better than CD, they think I'm off my trolley!

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi all
anyone had problems with speaker rattle from standard stereo speakers when playing heavy base 3+ and loud.
have had opc look at this they tried to help by adjusting speaker screws etc however sounds worse now after there attention.
not thinking of upgrade as porsche tell me that problem is not speakers but vibration from within the doors were mounted.
any body had similar problems
if did upgrade what was cost of bose
thanks
asif
You'd probably be much better off curing the actual problem, which is resonance of the door panel itself.
Have a look for a product called Dynamat, which is self-adhesive sound absorbing material specifically designed for car applications.
Have a look at
Prestige Audio
They are top end home and auto audio installers and I am looking at getting the stock system in my 996 upgraded by them in the next couple of months. I spoke to them about using a BOSE sub box as part of the install and they politly said "we couldn't recommend a sub box with such small volume, it simply would not complement the rest of the install" (I'm looking at the level 2, but with higher grade components).

Sound advice (pun intended[
]). It could be that the 'speaker is producing sound at the low natural frequency of a loose panel.....u have to try and find this loose panel. It could also be that you are playing the sound so loud that the 'speaker itself is 'clipping' (reaching it's end stops)...in which case either u will have to get a more powerful amp or more powerful 'speakers or both.
If u speak to top end hifi people, just the mention of the name Bose in the same sentence as hifi will get a laugh.
Bose is more of a 'lifestyle' hifi maker....the sound quality of their products is rubbish (relatively)
Subs are meant to produce lower frequency bass.....you need large (as in at least 5m) rooms to be able to recreate lowish bass, and more to reproduce serious bass (below 50hz - as frequency decreases the wavelength increases). Therefore any bass you will get in a car will always be boomy. Subs need to shift air, so they need to be large (8-10 inch drivers min)...not very convenient........
Very few people will ever have heard a hifi recreating what true bass sounds like (even below 100hz let alone 50hz), so most people think 'boom boom' bass is actually accurate - hence subs being popular (although most aren't true subs at all, and will almost never produce any bass below 50hz or even 100hz)
Another purpose of subs, is that it removes the 'burden' of reproducing bass from your mid/bass drivers, giving improved mid-range clarity/speed/timbre etc, subtleties totally lost in a 'boom boom' car environment.
(p.s I know nothing about car hifi, but it all translates[
].)
All very valid points there Rodney, you obviously have experience with HIFI (rather than lifestyle sound systems).
Agree with all your points and a good sub should not be heard, most people who come round and listen to my system at home say "there's not much bass is there"... but a good sub should not be 'booming' away with every spoken word/beat.
If there is a rattle that the speaker is makeing worse, then fixing it is the first thing to do... however if the system in the 996 is the stock (not Bose or Primium Sound System) like I have in mine, then listening to anything but Radio 5 Live streesses the speakers and head unit... hence the proposed upgrade.
I absolutely agree....I remember the sound of my system in my Boxster....hopeless...worst I'd ever heard. I have the sound upgrade pack in my car, much better, still hopeless.....my friend had a BMW325CIS with Harmon Kardon....sounded amazing...and now he has a RR Sport....the sound in that is phenomenal (Harmon Kardon Logic 7 550 Watts/14 speakers)
That upgrade at Prestige Audio is sure to blow your mind with an 8inch sub etc would love to hear it sometime[

I agree, Bose is a Lifestyle choice no question about that. If u want decent quality sound then Bose is not the answer. I have the Bose Upgrade in mine and franky its rubbish. It's "ok" when its cranked up very loud, but at normal volumes its struggles badly, with the mid's & trebles completly lost&muddled, with hardly any separation...so you have to turn it up very loud (which may not be a bad thing anyway) and only then it does sound "ok".
I am however definitely an audiophile and sound quality is very much in the ears of the beholder. It depends on the quality of your home system and what you are used to.
I say all this in consideration of the cost of the Bose and of course the Bose system is better than the lesser upgardes Porsche do....just for the money you should be able to get much much better quality sound than this.
If i was upgrading, which i'm not, then go with a specialist, like what Paul recommended at
Prestige Audio
. Companies like this will custom your install to your music taste and budget. You will be shocked at how fabulous music can sound from a decent HIFI. If you did spend a couple of grand on a decent system i guarantee you will be back on this forum raving about how unbelievable the sound is and how we must all rush out and upgrade [

Even when u have a decent set-up it's all about compromises.
But when u have a decent car hifi setup it really can be amazing, because most people's expectations of car hifi is very low. As u rightly state Danny - Porsche's offerings are poor value for money.
I just give up with car hifi and listen to the sports exhaust instead![
