Hi all,
A brand new sound appeared today towards the end of my grocery run, after the engine was pretty thoroughly warmed. On initial throttle tip in especially (and even at idle), you can hear a clacking sound that isn't the typical lifter/mechanical noise. A brief trawl through youtube and the forums here seems to support the
spark plug
hypothesis, but I figured I'd get y'all's take on it directly before I start opening up the car.
Thanks!
Loose
spark plug
?
If it is, the car will be falling on its face.
I would think a misfire of that nature is a combo of coilpack(s).
No code thrown in the instrument cluster?
If its running that poorly, plugs and coils at a minimum.

No code, no misfire that I can detect (have had many in the past due to the car's hatred of Costco gas), no oil consumption. Engine still pulls like a Deutsche Bahn train. Had new coils and plugs about 18 months and ~10,000 miles ago. The noise is brand new, I didn't hear anything like it until yesterday at the end of my drive. It seemed to subside significantly after the engine had cooled for about a half hour and was restarted to head home. I think the noise sounds somewhat similar to the one in this video:
Maybe my ears are too sensitive.
Your video sounds like it's not smooth.
I don't hear the same tick of the plug firing in the second video (albeit the wrong engine, but noises are noises)
If you have the means to lift the car and check it yourself, that's obviously the first line of defense.
10000 miles is a long way for something to suddenly work loose.
Wish I had more to offer.

No worries there, diagnosing sounds via the internet is always a little tricky. You can hear a similar sound in the second video, though is buried very deep towards the bass end of the spectrum. They both have similar tonal qualities, but it's difficult to detect without headphones/having heard one sound in person first for reference.
When I installed the plugs, I was able to torque them to spec. However, we were at the very bottom of the
torque wrench
's operating range, so I can easily imagine an under-torqued plug coming loose over time. Installation error is also a very real possibility haha. Oil analysis has always been clean, no consumption at all, no asymmetrical soot in the tailpipes, and the last borescope came out clean (about eight months ago). The car sat for a week between my drive yesterday and the last time I'd taken it out, so I can't imagine a bearing or something of that sort failed while it was sitting in the garage.
I plan on jacking the car up and checking them tomorrow after the grand prix, so hopefully that yields some results!
A brief update for anyone interested. The middle plug on the right bank was 30% looser than spec, so that seems like a likely culprit. Will update after a test drive, hopefully with good news!
did it fix it?! I love dead end posts
Even when you bring a necro-thread back to life 5 years after the last post? Maybe
@n163mv
will see this - but doubtful, he hasn't logged in for 2 years.
Joins a forum just to make that one pointless post in a five year old thread, and hasn't logged back in to see the replies since joining. Yeah, this sounds legit
Yeah, I love those types. They post a question when they’re in need, but their profile says:
