Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. The coolant reservoir cracking is very common - I'd have this checked first.
Leading evidence: 'Check first' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'hairline crack in the water reservior only found' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check first' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Had the coolant tank replaced by specialist and it has been fine since.

My 996 (99 c4) has just used a litre of coolant in just one week.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

had the same problem early january of this year- it turned out to be a hairline crack in the water reservior only found when a good friend in the trade put the tank under a presure rig which caused a very slight spry of coolant you could harly see.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi Everyone,
My 996 (99 c4) has just used a litre of coolant in just one week. There seem to be no traces on my drive way or around the coolant tank itself. There are no plumes of smoke from the exhaust either.
Any suggestions of where to look first?
Many Thanks in advance

How do you know it's used a litre of coolant? The system is pressurised causing the level to drop ie. you can fill it up to max but this will drop to min after a drive, Any excess coolant will be 'evacuated' from the car.

Hi
The level fell to below minimum and the coolant warning light came on. It took a litre to bring it up to max.

Hi Asim,
This happened to me a little while back with no visible trace of coolant on garage floor. Took it to the OPC and found a number of leakages in the cooling system. Parts replaced, coolant level stable again.
I would guess that you have leaky rads. A weak spot on the 996. You probably aren't seeing any coolant on the floor because it is under far less pressure when parked up. i.e. a weaping radiator becomes a leaking radiator when driving.

Jay T - would you suggest carrying a spare bottle of coolant around with you just in case? I do in the Golf.

Hi.
My 996 did the same thing. Used to need coolant refill every 4k or so. Had the coolant tank replaced by specialist and it has been fine since. Although right after the refit there was an air bubble in the system which caused the level to drop again. Was rectified by garage however.

I did carry around a bottle of coolant for a while. But never really needed to use it ad-hoc. Just topped up periodically at home.

if your rads are leaking they will spray the inside of the bumper when your driving as they will be under pressure, so go for a spin, stop, and have a look in your front air intakes for signs of moisture.
If there's none to be seen the other weak spot is the reservoir.
