Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

My cars are covered by my bank account add-ons (also have Porsche Assist on the turbo) but SWMBO uses Gem for her other car.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

10 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi All, Just wondered if anyone had any suggestions for alternatives to the usual RAC,AA, Green Flag etc - I've looked at some already but once you list Porsche over 10 years old, what a surprise(!) selection becomes somewhat restricted! J

POST 2Original post

I use AutoAid. It is an insurance based scheme, whereby they cover your costs. You pay the recovery/roadside assistance, and they pay you back. They have a centre you call if you break down, and they call someone out. It costs about £40, but covers both me and Mrs H, in whatever car we are driving at the time. Never had to use it though, so haven't put it to the test.

POST 3Original post

I use Autoaid ( https://www.autoaidbreakdown.co.uk/ ) . It is £40 for a year for you and a married partner is free This is not strictly breakdown cover because it is an insurance against breakdown. You still call them to get a garage truck out to your car but it works by you paying for the recovery (up to five people anywhere in the UK) and then claiming it back from AutoAid.They claim to repay you in 14 days but we've never had to claim (touch wood).

POST 4Original post

My cars are covered by my bank account add-ons (also have Porsche Assist on the turbo) but SWMBO uses Gem for her other car. Seem very good http://www.motoringassist.com/

POST 5Original post

You get a good Club discount with both AA and RAC. Enough for me to stick with them. No problem with my 25 year old Porsche. [ ] There are a lot of restrictions on the "free" breakdown cover I get with my insurance.

POST 6Original post

I've just added Breakdown Cover to the LV policy which covers my BMW for £86.45-this then gives my wife & I personal cover for any car of any age we are driving or passengers in plus Recovery,& home assistance for our 3 current cars -the BMW-(main driver),my wife's 924S (30yrs old next year)& my 924S track day/alternative drive (29 yrs old next year) Not added European cover but it is cheap to add.Previously with Green Flag(no complaints ) but they wouldn't include the track car under their personal cover as it's over 16 yrs old yet the cover was based on my wife's car extending to the BMW under the Personal cover!

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Good advice - thanks - I've taken the Autoaid option - hopefully it will only ever be 'just in case'.....! Thanks all. J

POST 8Original post

Autoaid is brilliant, I've had it for about 6 years and used it on a number of occasions with my TVR. The TVR needed at slideback transporter when it broke down and I could get one no problem, I also used it when my wife's golf had a wiper breakdown on the Pennines while we were heading for the airport, autoaid sent a taxi to take us to the airport and took the car to a garage where it got repaired whilst we were laying in the sun, the only bill we had to settle was the wiper repair. You should pay all the bills then claim back what you can but some garages will just invoice autoaid direct and save you the hassle. You can either call the autoaid breakdown number and they'll sort it or you call your own local friendly recovery company and submit their invoice as I did with the TVR. Also, because it's only £40 whether you use it or not, it's cheaper than the AA, RAC etc etc. Great choice Julius

POST 9Original post

Its worth looking at the best deals for AA and RAC through Quidco. They offer some cracking cashback deals which can reduce the cost by upto 50%. They don't seem to have an issue with older cars either. The AA recovered my old range rover to the garage last week - I always find the guys that come out very friendly and efficient. They can certainly throw those lorries into and out of the tiniest spaces!

POST 10Original post

+1 for LV, not for my 944 but for my 10 year old SAAB 9-5. It's actually Britannia Rescue. I mention it only because we had cause to use them whilst in France this summer. Split turbo intake in Limoges, so lots of black smoke but it still ran, so we carried on...however they were very attentive. When first phoned they immediately offered a replacement car, then when we said we'd soldier on they called twice daily to see how things were going. Impressive. Worst case, they would have flown me home then back again to collect the car after a local repair. A good bodge in the end by local mechanic in la France Profond got us home.
