Suggestion
Alternatively drill larger holes to find best fitment when positioning the trim, then fill with glue - just some thoughts...

Suggestion
I have ordered a prototype to be printed using multi jet fusion technology which will make it a suitable to withstand high temperature, be durable and strong as OEM part.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

The silver finish (appears to be foil-like) is starting to bubble and lift, as you can see from the pictures.
Has anyone ever done the replacement? Ideally I would like to do one with carbon fibre, but I am not going to break the bank for it.
Also is the shifter boot glued to the trim or can it be saved and reused? It appears to be an entire assembly, and really I would not like to have to replace the whole thing.
That’s very odd. Almost looks like someone else painted it. I do not think that specific trim piece is available on its own.
On my Exclusive shifter, yes, the boot was glued to the trim ring piece and industrial zip-tied to the shift ****. It is has been replaced by al Alcantara piece

My Alcantara Project
same exact thing happened to mine. it had not been repaired or repainted. i tried to sand it for repaint and it didn't go well (you sand through the metal which then leaves an unsmooth surface. metal, plastic, metal leaving you with the opposite problem).
plan b: the tough metal was strongly adhered to plastic and pretty much impossible to peel off.
only explanation i can come up with is expansion and shrinkage due to heat and cold of the plastic and or metal.
i tossed it after removing the **** and bought a new alcantara one from suncoast with no self destructing ring.
I picked up a used shifter boot from eBay with the same problem.
If you're looking for a cheap/simple DIY repair here's what I did. I carefully separated the glued on horseshoe shaped piece from the leather boot and was able to peel off the aluminum "foil" coating with my fingernail and a razor blade exposing white plastic underneath. I lightly sanded then primed with Krylon spray paint for plastic then top coated with silver Krylon. Looks good and is a close match to the original finish.
It may be worth a try before spending $$ on replacing.
This is old thread, but i have ran into same issue, while disassembling couple of the prongs coming off the trim piece broke off. Since this is a part not sold separately and seeing a lot of people asking about it i thought of making one from scratch. I just finished prototyping achieving exact fit. I have ordered a prototype to be printed using multi jet fusion technology which will make it a suitable to withstand high temperature, be durable and strong as OEM part.
I thought i will gauge the interest, pending the high quality of the final product, would anyone be interested ordering it? Price - not sure yet... It wont brake the bank. Here is the preview of what to expect (turbo script is only for testing, it can be anything you want or nothing).
Although i don't have the file converted to one appropriate for CNC milling (doable though), approximate cost would be $800-900 (type of aluminum doesn't seem to impact price too much). This is with brushed finish. Quite expensive for little trim piece - volume order does significantly lower the cost.
Something to keep in mind - OEM part is made out of plastic then metal plated to give it the final look. Manufacturer i'm using unfortunately doesn't offer aluminum plating only nickel, copper or gold.
For those cars that came without trim over the boot, plastic piece that holds the boot does not have holes drilled to be able to install trim. I'm prepping a template to accurately drill holes for trim installation. Only those which had the trim from manufacturer had those holes predrilled.
Alternatively i may create a snap on/glue on version to save on drilling and risking damaging the boot.
Just a quick update. Prototype came back today and i'm very happy with the result. Quality of the part is very good, all details came out very well. Obviously this part is raw so next step is to prep and paint. On the flip side you can see how pegs are properly lining up with the holes.
I'm in as well. My current ring is starting to peel the silver too. Porsche wants $955 for a replacement (entire assembly of ring, boot and ****) and that's the cost on sale at Suncoast
I am also interested, without the script. I'd be especially interested in the raw version, so that I can finish it myself.
Thanks for spearheading this, it's a niggling thing, but one that you tend to see every time you get in the car.
Cheers
I'm interested, without the script. I managed to refurb mine, but I wouldn't mind a backup. I've found that Tremclad actually has a metallic aluminum finish that matches very closely to the original. Not perfect, but pretty close.
I mean, I'd also be potentially interested in a real aluminum one, but we may need to get an economy of scale going.
Everyone, just a quick update on boot trim progress. All turned out great, it fits like OEM part. I have ordered a sample batch from manufacturing (without turbo script), its set to arrive May 10. Inquiries to purchase it from the members were more than i expected. Since it doesn't make sense for me to make a business out of one part, i will most likely talk with established online sellers to sell it via their channels. I wanted to offer the members here a beta tester price of $30 (+ flat $5 shipping in USA) - for unfinished part (you would need to paint it to a desired color).
I'm receiving 10 of the trims, please PM me with interest and i will respond with my paypal (and venmo) details.
I received and installed my prototype today. I'll have to remove it and paint it sometime. I needed to drill six small holes in my existing boot/trim (well, eight because I messed up the spacing a bit). I think that I will use an adhesive to hold the trim more flush with the boot after painting. If you buy one of these I recommend lining up the
front
holes and drilling those first then lining everything else up based on those.
You can see some areas where the trim doesn't quite sit flush with the center console but that's pretty much installer error. I think using adhesive to hold the trim more flush with the boot should take care of that.
Drilling holes precisely is not as easy as it may sound. Trim slides in on bit of an angle so it very tricky do find proper spots for the holes. Because of several curves in the console precise hole placement makes or brakes the fitment. Trim is also bit wider on the open side (tips) than the boot (retaining frame), reason for that is during install these get closer creating additional curve to fit properly. I would even suggest for those who want to use this trim on boots that are not pre drilled, it may be best to cut off the stands from the trim and glue it on to the leather - i have not tested so can't vouch for longevity or even the look. Alternatively drill larger holes to find best fitment when positioning the trim, then fill with glue - just some thoughts...
Unfortunately placement of the holes is pretty random, there is no symmetry - bit odd for german engineering
One last note. On OEM boots with horseshoe trim, boot retaining frame (996.552.655.01) is cut at the front (reference pic), i believe this is to make space for the horseshoe trim to slide easily under batwing - may not be necessary to alter that, but wanted to mention.
Lastly i must have forgot to post fitment test on console... adding those pics as well - you will notice slight gap, the trim is loosely sitting on retaining frame, once lightly pressed all those disappear.
I restored and painted my original to be an exact match. Painting it is very easy, and I'm sure the paint is
much
more durable than the original foil finish,
but getting that foil off and sanding perfectly smooth is a B****
.
Buying your printed blank and painting it seems like a much better solution, but is the blank perfectly smooth? I ask because it appears to have some texture in the photos. I think it needs to be smooth to look good

You will only need to drill to the boot and frame that holds the boot (part that detaches from the console and to which boot is glued). Alternatively if you rather not drill, you could cut off the prongs from the trim and glue trim directly onto the boot itself (only theoretically, as I have not tried/tested it)
For those with cars not equipped originally with trim, please refer to some of my photos earlier, 2 front corners are trimmed on frames that came with trim from a factory, this is so that the trim itself has a space to be tucked under the center console, you can try without cutting those to see if it looks ok, I'm only mentioning that since I found that to be the case on my Turbo.
Hi Tom,
I have got two of the rings from kropka, they are smooth and can be painted. I did sand mine prior to painting with 400 and then 1200. Painted with four coats of silver although there is a silver that look like chrome when dried.
Let the paint cure for as long as possible prior to handling otherwise it will smudge and move when handled. It's a slow process to add the leather, I got my leather with a beautiful texture out of Mountain Leather Supply in Sandy UT. (they have any species, texture or color you want)
Good Luck with it , be patient with the process!!
Kind Regards,
