A good friend was advised by his Acura dealer in So Cal that 87 octane would run OK in an engine that should use 91 octane. Has anyone ever tried low octane in their Cayman S? I know some posts refer to much higher octane fuels for performance but none I have seen discuss lower octane fuels. The difference apparently has to do with the alledgedly "cleaner" burning fuel required to prevent pollution.
Just curious!
The car will run - the computer will compensate for the reduced octane and prevent any detonation, not a problem... it probably won't even hurt the car... but, it will not perform very well. For an Acura, maybe not such a big deal, but you presumably bought your Porsche for it's performance potential, and that performance will not be very good if you're using 87 octane.

The Cayman is supposed to be run on 93 octane. The computer does compensate for lower octane but it can only do so much. I have only used 91 with some 100 before an autocross and have not had any problems.
There is a good discussion on that subject in the Cayman Owners' Manual. Straight from the horse’s mouth.
But SF, you said it yourself, there is a shortage of manuals out there.
Guys:
Let me get my creds out there first. I own a company that audits refineries for compliance with gasoline environmental regulations. I've been working in the oil industry for over 25 years, 15 of them doing the audits.
Now, clean has nothing to do with octane. It's great that CARB forces refiners and car manufacturers to dance to their tune, (witness the MTBE ban), but octane has been measured by ASTM D-2699 and D-2700 since Christ was a Corporal. Lot's of dirty fuel, lots of clean fuel passed through the octane engines used to measure octane.
So, the Acura dealer is totally wrong.
Your Porsche wants steak.

I have been looking in on this site for awhile, all the time being incredibly jealous of all the Cayman owners. The great discussions here make me only more excited when I finally get my dream car. But, I am wondering if there is a Cayman site where Sante Fe is not registered. Someone posts a discussion topic and he shoots it down. Very annoying!
Please don't be cheap, CA 91 Octane is bad enough for the car, as it is. I'd personally go get it tuned for CA 91 Octane, as these cars are tuned for 93 Octane. I would never even think about running anything less...
Thanks to all for the replies. This response is why I think this site is absolutely the BEST!
My gut feel was this suggestion was crap but geez, who really knows and there are so many knowledgeable people on this site.
