Since the interior is gutted at this point, I tested the drain by pouring water down the sunroof hole.

Either way if you've already pulled most of the interior I'd remove the headliner to inspect the lines.

But my best advice is to repair the core problem, not just the symptoms.

You obviously have a secondary problem associated with the drain improperly vacating water that has enter the sunroof mechanism, but I'd replace the gasket first and then move to the drain.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Ok...My new to me 996 is leaking water into the interior when it rains. Given how much water was saturated into the carpet, I think this has been an issue for a long time. Thanks PO for mentioning that...
I have gutted the interior to pull the carpet and get all the water out.
I have attempted to clear the sunroof drain. I have tried using my air compressor (small 2 gal) to blow any debris out. I did this by blowing from the drain hole at the sunroof.
I have also tried running weed wacker line down the drain tube. This works till the tube makes a 90 degree turn to exit the vehicle.
Since the interior is gutted at this point, I tested the drain by pouring water down the sunroof hole. Most of it drained out, but I still got a little bit leaking into the car.
Given that the water exits inside of the fender, how exactly do you clear that section of the drain? There is no way to get a compressor in there and even the weed wacker line won't go in far enough to do anything.
Clearly there is something I am missing here....
Hi welcome!
Do you know where the water is leaking from?
Given it drains into the cabin it could be that the drainage hose isn't seated correctly on the frame or perhaps it has a small split causing the water to drain out.
Either way if you've already pulled most of the interior I'd remove the headliner to inspect the lines. They are clearly visible without it. If you need steps on how to do this I can write them up, I recently did it.
Cheers!
It is coming into the car under the dash, and dripping around the area that has the fuse box in the drivers side footwell. I can't see the exact spot it is coming from, but I think it is where the drain tube makes the left turn to exit in the fender.
Thanks. That link is mostly focused on the drains at the rear for the cab owners. My car is a coupe and the water is coming in from the front sunroof drain on the drivers side that exists in the front fender.
Seems like if it's allowing water to enter the car while parked then it's not sealing properly. Therefore, this is gasket problem (#10 in the attached picture or part# 996-564-211-00) that needs to be replaced. If it's sealing off the water, than the drain would not be necessary, right? IMHO, the drain is backup. In all my years of experiencing sunroof leaks, it was usually the rubber gasket or seal that was the problem. You obviously have a secondary problem associated with the drain improperly vacating water that has enter the sunroof mechanism, but I'd replace the gasket first and then move to the drain.
Tracing the results of a leak can be frustrating. But my best advice is to repair the core problem, not just the symptoms.
You should also consider replacing the piping (i.e. #2 seal surround) the sunroof. Here's a picture...

That diagram is very helpful! Is it possible that #11 and #14 could be partially disconnected? How do you access where those 2 pieces connect?
I completely agree about the sunroof seal. With the sunroof closed there shouldn't be the potential for much water to get in the car in the first place. I have only owned this car since July, so I have no idea how long this has been a problem. The amount of water in the carpet padding is amazing. It is truly like a sponge.
You'd have to remove the headliner, but I wouldn't recommend that just yet. I'd first advise you to search other possible water intrusion points like around the doors, windows, and/or frunk drains. For example, if the frunk drains are clogged it could backup and spill over and find it's way through some of the fire wall ports. But it also could be a bad window or door seal too.
This is just my personal advice here... but I'd use a small plumbers auger to clear out the drains. I've seen some professional use "draino" to unclog tubes. Apparently bio-phlegm grew to the point to blocking the tubes. Anyway, I hope you find the source of the problem!
Not sure his resolution, but check the drains by the battery - those get clogged and if you're on anything but downhill facing, the water will come in under the dash and soak the carpet. My car is parked on a 30 driveway when it's not in the garage, and I've had water get in if I didn't "pre-clear" the drains before a rain event.
