Periodically I go to the gas station and find that I get a prematrue cut-off of fuel from the pump. When I over-ride the fuel control nozzle, it will accept more fuel, but even then it seems balky. Sometimes I can over-ride and push a few gallons more into the tank. Is this 1) my operator error? 2) gas pump bug? 3) so-called "air lock in the tank" problem? or 4) other? Based on my experience with marine tanks, I'm wondering if the venting system is not fully operational. However I doubt this because most of my tank fills are normal ones. Any thoughts?
I think this is an antipollution device on the station pump. It is supposed to prevent spillage.
I've only had my Cayman long enough to get gas 3 times. Two of these times have resulted in only a half tank of gas after attempting to fill-up. I'm going to pay closer attention next time and see if I can figure out what the problem is.
I have had similar experiences, but it varies by the station. Some pumps are super sensitive. Once you know which ones cut off early you can nurse the pump handle to get it closer to full.
This makes me crazy when filling up. About 50% of the time I get a full tank no matter how slow I set the pump. I'm in Cal. and there are fume recovery nozzles (I think that's what they are) on all pumps in my area. I don't like spilling fuel on the car so I'm very cautious about topping off. I've learned to live with a 7/8ths fill up in lieu of an overfill. This topic has popped up before somewhere here, as I recall you are not alone with this issue.
It has to do with the angle of the nozzle in the spout. Twist it a little until it flows better.
I just set the nozzle on low and then fill until it shits off. Is it all of the way full? The gauge says so. Beyond that I don't really care ...
I have had the same experience with rejected fuel nozzles. At one station I could only get a gallon in despite numerous attempts at the slowest fill rate. I went to the station next door and filled up. I tried all angles of attack. I agree it has to do with the auto shut off but there must be some additional factors that the car introduces. I am sure I will find the correct way to hold my tongue and the fill up process will smooth out. beech
This happens to me, but I just the nozzle out a bit and it continues to fill.
