Suggestion

If I was changing my exhaust I would go aftermarket in order to get great sound and increased power for the same or lower price compared with the factory option.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello everyone. I've been viewing this forum for the past few months to get a feel for what's happening with the 986. Now I"m getting serious about purchasing a 2001 'S' and the option list includes Sport Exhaust System, code XLF. Can anyone give me details of what exactly this is?

POST 2Original post

While the sports exhaust is nice to have as an option since the car is used and you won't be paying extra for it. All it does is allow you to switch in "loud" mode for a throatier sound. It gives you no power gains at all. If I was changing my exhaust I would go aftermarket in order to get great sound and increased power for the same or lower price compared with the factory option.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

How do you go about changing between the two modes? I asked the owner if it had an interior switch to do this and he said no.

POST 4Original post

Not sure. I believe my friend's 996 has a switch on the dash.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Does that mean this option is simply a full time sportier sounding exhaust?

POST 7Original post

Never said that. The bypass valves close 27-42mph with the standard install. The speed they drive through villages.

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
