Suggestion

Yes there is a magnet made into the flap, it is not serviceable, if what you state is true that you can activate the ORVR by using an external magnet but it wont activate normally then you will need to replace the whole filler neck...( but first make sure the reed switch is correctly located on the filler neck ))

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi all. Newb here. 2001 Carrera 4. I had my check engine light come on. I took it to the dealer who changed to a new gas cap and fuel line vent valve. After driving for a few days, when I needed to refuel the vehicle, I could only get in 0.2 gallons at a time with gas spitting out. I returned to the dealer who said it was an issue with the Evap system. I asked him about the reed valve and he said the gas spits out only if the tank is full, so my fuel level sensor was also broken. I declined those repairs. Since then, I can still only fill 0.2 gallons at a time. But now I hear a hiss when I push on the gas flap and air bubbles emerge through the flap and through any gas sitting in the lip. I read through the forums and checked E6 fuse, reed valve, fueling with pump upside down. Those are all functioning or in place. But I hadnt read about these bubbles. Any suggestions? Thanks!

You didn't mention the fuel gauge wasn't working so I doubt that. That would be ~$1k parts and labor. Leave it to the dealer to find the path of maximum cost. Check out the part in the diagram below along with the condition of the vacuum lines. I believe it's just a one way valve and goes to the canister but if it fails or there is a vacuum leak then the valve in the filler neck won't operate correctly. There are a few posts on RL about this problem..

POST 3Original post

Your back story and Dealership conversation is very hard to follow and confusing, but what I get is you are having trouble re-fueling. Yes fuse E6? is a common issue, double check this. Also the fuse keeps power alive when the engine is turned off for re-fueling. There is a magnetic switch in part #12 in the diagram that senses the flap is being opened for re-fueling, the switch then activates the ORVR vent valve part #21 to allow air to flow out as fuel is flowing in. If you take your finger and open the flap and listen closely, you can actually hear the ORVR vent valve actuate if it is working .( and everything is quite) . The ORVR is located on top of the fuel tank and underneath the battery tray. It is off to the side and is a bit difficult to R&R.. It can be anyone of the parts, so if you are not keen on troubleshooting, you should take it to a Pro. ( but start with a wiring diagram, a DVOM and test the fuse circuit).

POST 4Original post

I don't have a C4 but I remember reading here that this is a relatively common problem with C4s. You should be able to find more than a few discussions on this topic here. I would discount what the dealer said about the fuel gauge. The search function isn't that great but you can use Google as "site:Rennlist.com C4 Fueling" or such.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks everyone. I had put the reed valve sensor in the wrong spot. After I got it in the right spot, it filled like a champ. But now overflows Will keep working at it.
