I do think I will have the break in oil changed though.
Leading evidence: 'Replace though' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'correlation between oil consumption and how hard you drive' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check on your oil gauge' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suspected cause
I feel there is probably a correlation between oil consumption and how hard you drive.

Suggestion
I was reading an article about oil changes and it seems as if some folks recommend that the oil be changed after the first 5ooo miles.

It's the same Mobil 1 0W-40 that the changes are done with.

Suggestion
If you do mostly street driving, even being aggressive with the car now and again, 15k between oil changes should really be fine, but 10k keeps you on a good schedule with the regular maintenance intervals of 20k miles.

Suggestion
As for oil consumption appearing to be high after a hard run (which was preceeded by short trips, etc which caused water to accumulate..) - that's an even bigger crock.
Use little more oil than the newer water-cooled cars

is very high consumption, and from my experience, even the old air-cooled motors didn't come close to that, although they seemed to use a little more oil than the newer water-cooled cars.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I was reading an article about oil changes and it seems as if some folks recommend that the oil be changed after the first 5ooo miles. My '07 CS is at 5100 and I don't know whether to take it in to the dealer to get the oil changed? Can someone give me some advice? Steve
check on your oil gauge
porsche recomends 15000-20000 miles for each oil change
but my car is diffrent, it was dry on 2000 miles, and i went to the dealer and fill it up, but now at 7500 miles, the oil is dry again.
but hey, theres no harm changing your oil every 5000 miles.
I'll beat Santa Fe to the punch! Many threads on this. Just search for 'oil' and 'change' and you'll find a massive amount of grey matter that was focused on this in the past! Opinions and elixirs abound therein. You will be astounded, amazed, confounded and ultimately confused as aside from the factory interval everyone has an opinion! Even 'look in the manual' will be found!:drivingskid:
Thanks. I have read the manual 3 times cover to cover. I have read the threads. THis is just one of those things where everyone has an opinion. I guess I will have to develop yet another opinion...mine. Thanks again. I do think I will have the break in oil changed though. Then...who know's. maybe fodder for 100 more threads on the topic. HAPPY DRIVING AND THANKS!!
That sounds like excessive oil burn. Mine has burned a little in the first 1000 miles but it was like 200ml. Have you done a mod to your engine to warrant this, or is this still considered normal early off in the break in period?
Toona - I changed mine for the first time at 5k miles, and again at 10k miles. I now have a little over 20k on the clock, and will have the 20k service done in a week or so. I'm in the "every 10k miles" camp on oil changes, but then I also track and autocross the car quite a bit. If you do mostly street driving, even being aggressive with the car now and again, 15k between oil changes should really be fine, but 10k keeps you on a good schedule with the regular maintenance intervals of 20k miles.
A tip - if you use the dealer to do your oil changes, when you take the car in tell them you want oil and filter change only... otherwise they'll do the full "low mileage service" with all the inspections, etc. which will cost a bunch more - when they do just oil and filter, they'll still give the car the once-over look-see, and if they see anything untoward, they'll tell you about it.

IMHO, that is excessive oil consumption for a Porsche.
My first Pcar was an 05 2.7 987 Boxster, broke it in strictly per the manual. In the first 800 miles it used one mark of oil (1/5 quart). Had it changed at 2K and in the next 15K miles it never went below full. My 07 CS is still on full at 1200 miles. I probably drive very conservatively compared to most Pcar owners and for my 60K believe in following the manual (pretty much). I feel there is probably a correlation between oil consumption and how hard you drive.
John - I agree - Porsche's maximum spec. is very high consumption, and from my experience, even the old air-cooled motors didn't come close to that, although they seemed to use a little more oil than the newer water-cooled cars.

Although the manual is generally to be believed, I think the oil consumption blurb is a crock. The only two vehicles that I had that burnt that much oil were an old beater when I was young, and the valve guides were shot (and the rings and the....) and a large bore air cooled motorcycle that I ran at 90-100 mph for about 250 miles. As for oil consumption appearing to be high after a hard run (which was preceeded by short trips, etc which caused water to accumulate..) - that's an even bigger crock. If there's that much water in your oil then it should be so emulsified that it looks like vanilla pudding (and can we tell - no, because unless I drain the oil I don't have a dipstick or an oil cap on which the emulsification can gather on). Could it happen? Sure, but I don't think that's a very common reason. Porsche's way of deflecting concerns about oil consumption. Did you know that a lot of gauges in cars don't tell the truth either, just so the consumer doesn't get anxious (especially coolant temperature)
My guess is they do this to keep people from hassling the service department because of a little oil use. But yes, I have to agree that if my car were burring 1qt in 600 miles, I'd be very worried. In fact, if a Cayman was burring this much oil, I bet the catalytic converters would fail.
For me, 1qt in 3,000-5,000 miles would not be alarming.
Thanks again for the help, Brad. It's amazing that when I have any questions, I would rather come to this site than asking the dealer. You guys are great.
