When I got out it became immediately obvious - the deeper water was running across the track diagonally, so on each axle one wheel is floating before the other, which is still either rolling (front) or being powered forward (rear).

I've also had it happen on the road - after the M9 splits from the M80 Southbound at Stirling, the road curves gently right but with a strong camber drop running right to left (offside to nearside), just at a point where you get a lot of surface runoff due to poor drainage.

Someone might try and churn that one back out. Was the owner insured? Have you got the full reg? If he was insured, then posting up the reg might save some future potential buyer a great deal of heartache.

Yip that was my car. The accident happened 24hrs after I picked it up with only 80 miles on the clock. Both myself and my 4 year old daughter walked out the car with no injuries what so ever. We were incredibly lucky. And just before people go off on one about me driving like an idiot with my daughter in the car, I was doing fifty in a sixty zone in a straight line. The car spun and was hit by an oncoming car which ripped the engine out the GT3 (that ended up about 100 feet away half way up a tree). The four people in the other car had to be cut out but were also luckily okay. The GT3 was going to roll but again luckily hit a telephone pole which stopped it going over (you can see where it hit the pole on the drivers side just in front of the door). I'm not going into details in an open forum of how it happened. The insurance has paid me out in full (although they did keep asking me for the mileage as I don't think they believed me!). D.

No offence but why's that then? I'm sure as enthusiastic drivers we'd all be interested to know just how a car spins off the road whilst going in a straight line at 50mph. Breaking traction at those speeds would make you think of aqua-planing though it would have to be quite deep water to overcome the depth of those tyres at that speed but it would be very interesting to know if they can be overwhelmed so easily (I'm obviously assuming lead footed-ness isn't to blame what with your precious cargo etc). Excluding the above I can only assume mechanical failure? As all have said, both you & yours are fine & that's what counts the most, but your post seems to pose more questions than it answers.

DMC2: The most important thing by far is that you are both OK. I have had some prior experience with moments with Cups in an RS rather unexpectedly, and completely understand that this is not the place for an opened discussion. However, you have rightly pointed out that its just a car...

RDMcG said: DMC2: The most important thing by far is that you are both OK. Absolutely, pictures looked very scary so glad to hear both parties were ok. Really sorry that your daughter was caught up in the situation, a nightmare for any parent. Hoping that the car did not suffer some kind of catastrophic mechanical failure, and the accident was due to something non-Porsche related. Either way, I respect your decision to not want to go into details. Edited by redback911 on Wednesday 19th February 05:11

POST 43Original post

Well as everyone is saying the only way to go off the road is to drive it off the road, if that did not happen it must be a Porsche failure., which for any new owner is going to put the s ts up them. ESP when you said no way you want another one !!! When it's the car of 2014. So it is imo a bit unfair to only state a little bit what happened when that's clearly impossible to do as no car spins in a straight line at 50mph. Fast insurance payout also, how does market value work when the markets 20k above list ? I ofcourse do respect you not posting but you should have not posted any thing and then no one would have had any questions. To me I can only think rear steer fail as any other issue can be driver corrected at such low speeds and all the tech it has.

POST 44Original post

Glad you are ok dmc2. Shakes you pretty hard something like that never mind having your little one in there too. To the other posters, Losing the back end on a Gt3 like that on cups at 50 probably means standing water and/or road obstruction. Weather not been too clever as of late, temps would have been ok. A strong back end kick out through standing water and/or obstruction with Fairly slack default psm on the gt3 would mean that you would need to really be alert for a back end kick out at all times rather than enjoying a leisurely drive with your kid in your new toy. Trying to get the rear end back in on a 911 is hard enough if you are expecting it never mind if you are relaxing.

It's the guys prerogative as to whether to state all the facts or not. http://youtu.be/CHhJcDAt_zE Why post a drag strip with some one at wot ? As I said, even hitting standing water a modern a car is not going to spin uncontrollable from the back end at those speeds. It has to be a car fail the way he was talking and not wanting another. Hence he should have not posted half a story, as now the thread will all go like this :-) As it happens the day I picked my gt3 up it was a hellish day and the car had bold rears, it had a moment or two but much higher speeds. But a 991 spinning at 50mph at a steady speed is hard to swallow with out a part failing. I guess we will never know though.

POST 47Original post

A drag strip is a straight line last time I looked. The GTR is doing less than 50, and he has tech, and he loses control.... You're now making stuff up. Whilst no one but those involved know what happened, he did not state he was doing a "steady 50". He said he was doing a 50 in a 60. Boot down from 30, and hit the "wrong road surface" and he could be going sideways at 50. I'm not going to second guess what happened, but I don't see that you will get to the facts by doing it either.

I was in a 996 GT3 admitedly already at a steady 50mph (past a 50 mph gatso) in third gear, accelerated away semi-hard only to find the rear end starting to go sideways with another car to my left and a central reservation to my right! Fortunately managed to get the car back under control, drove home at 25mph and promptly changed to another set of more appropriate tyres!

Had a very similar experience a few weeks ago on an M25 slip road in my 997 GT2, back end completely lost traction at about 50mph under very light throttle, PSM gathered it up without too much fuss though, which really makes me wonder what happened here. Glad everyone's ok though, that's all that really matters.

I do feel for the chap with this car, imagine his excitement on his new purchase, then the horror of a serious incident with his young daughter. So glad everyone involved is OK. Have to say though some of the comments will not be helping his situation. We all feel awful when something like this goes wrong whether our fault or not, he has chosen not to talk openly on a forum and we should respect his decision. Chin up DMC2

POST 56Original post

As previously said in this thread, its DMC2's business! to be honest, if i had just been in an accident of this size, i wouldn't want to talk about it either, who cares how it happened, that isn't the point, the point is that both him and his daughter are okay, stop bullying him with questions its unfair! End of. Rant over!

POST 57Original post

preparing for thread lock in a moment... The guy who crashed doesnt want to talk about it... lots of people saying they dont believe what little info he gave across and are goading him into stating more info... Leave the guy alone... its a harrowing enough ordeal without coming on here and then finding several people are demanding info, then questioning what happened as its all very strange, blah, blah, blah... He didnt ask for advice, etc... he confirmed that it was his car and should be left at that.

POST 59Original post

Anyone who says the incident must have been caused by the car clearly hasn't considered all the potential scenarios properly, or perhaps doesn't have the experience to do so. I was in my 911 SC race car on Cups with special extra wet cuts in them (widening some existing channels, and extending others) and after the first lap at Cadwell Park I'd just gone over the start/finish line (yes, faster than 50mph but a lighter car on narrower, tyres with improved water dispersal)) when all of a sudden the back end went violently right, spinning me (sadly into a stranded Caterham on the left verge that had broken down just over the start line). I'm known for being very good at catching rear end slides and getting cars back from very big angles but nothing I did in this case made any difference and it all happened lightning fast too. I realised I must have aquaplaned but couldn't work out why it had spun, rather than floating over and continuing in the dead straight line direction I was heading. When I got out it became immediately obvious - the deeper water was running across the track diagonally, so on each axle one wheel is floating before the other, which is still either rolling (front) or being powered forward (rear). I've no idea what happened in DMC2's case although it's likely that it wasn't the car and therefore by a process of elimination must have been driver error - but that doesn't mean it wouldn't have happened to anyone else in the same circumstances. When you're driving moderately along a very very wet road, would you really know if it was a bit deeper in places in front of you, so much so that the car could aquaplane suddenly in a non-uniform fashion? I doubt any of us could, but the IAM and so on would say that one should drive slower, assuming the worst ahead - if it's the case that this spin wouldn't have happened had he been going 40mph (or whatever) then you'd have to agree with them.

POST 61Original post

A few days after buying my 997.1 GT3 (still on its original Cup tyres) I was on a very wet M4 with really biblical rain and I was in the inside lane when the car suddenly just 'sat up' on some water and I found the front of the car was now pointing to 2 o'clock and the rear was rapidly rotating round to 9. All of a sudden the car found grip and luckily I was steering into the skid and the car straigtened itself and I carried on down the motorway.......with a brown stained seat. When I relay this story to others I tell them that the only reason I was OK is because of my god-like driving skills but in actual fact, it was just pure damm luck that saved me! Nothing else, just pure dumb luck! OP, I know you must be feeling low at the moment but hopefully, given time, you will feel better about this whole s tty scenario.

after DMC2 cars history of owning many GT3's, I still find it very odd, esp now DMC2 bought V12 front engine RWD car. live your life on a forum you have to take the rough with the smooth and expect questions to bazar statements. DMC2 should NOT have stated "the car spun at 50mph in a straight line" while not driving like an idiot. As the common thought is now, DMC2 floored it by 95% of posters. If it's for legal reason you don't post any thing, or if you don't want questions asking you again don't post, simple forum guidelines really. any way to DMC2 enjoy your V12 Vantage SD :-). I am always very fair and non of my posts ever get personal, bar to about 2 people. I think if DMC2 said he was not driving like an idiot, then it can only be a car failure, others did not agree and went the other way. I could not be more fair in this thread. DMC2 has clearly moved onto a more powerfull RWD car which is far more tail happy, which again leads me to the 911 having a car failure esp when the DMC2 tuned down the offer of another 991 GT3 which have 20k premiums in them and which he stated only a few weeks back was one of the top 3 cars of 2014. I'm surprised nobody is linking the loss of control with the factory recall to replace the oil cooler bolts. If a cooler pipe comes adrift and oil is sprayed onto the rear wheels or the road ahead of the rear wheels then.......

POST 70Original post

Very poor analysis Demon. Why would buying a powerful rwd car give any clues as to whether the driver or previous car was at fault? Odd. We don't know the facts so why not stop speculating.

I didn't want to post any information about my accident, in fact it was last year it happened. I purely wanted to confirm that it was me and I was alright when I saw the topic, as a few people on here would instantly know it was mine and would be concerned. CGJJ is exactly right, I'm purposely being careful with my words as there could be legal implications Please remember this is 6 figure plus insurance claim with an already controversial car involved. As for the speculation regarding driver error please consider this, the mother of my children was in the car in front of me with my son and another car driven by an individual who was behind me and who kindly waited and gave a statement to the police both witnessed the accident. The police stated it was not my fault. I WILL not for obvious reasons discuss it anymore on here, if anybody doesn't like that then tuff. It isn't their life. The end.

Why as a collective can't people just be happy DMC2 and his daughter are safe and appreciate he doesn't want to go into details - which he's perfectly justified in doing. There a massive range of scenarios which could lead to the car being at fault - with a majority of those being one's you wouldn't wish to talk about - ie, a wheel falling off (absolutely not related to this post, just an example).

Agreed and well said. Now, what's all this about wheels falling off GT3s?

I deplore the speculation on this thread, and completely understand and support your decision to be careful about your words. The web seems to encourage a lot of assertions without any factual basis. I wish you the best with resolving the matter, and hope that we can avoid any further demands for information or criticism without any knowledge of the event.

Very glad you were both alright. Looks like it took quite and impact but stood up to it well.

POST 76Original post

Good luck to you, you didn't start the topic, family okay and insurance paying out plus police happy. Those keen to 'know' what happened hiding behind being concerned that the model might have issues should find something more rewarding to do with their time.

Well I'm glad that everybody's ok. Must have been pretty f king terrifying for family in a car following (and also for anybody going the other way that got caught up in it). All's well that ends well though. QED.

thegoose said: Anyone who says the incident must have been caused by the car clearly hasn't considered all the potential scenarios properly, or perhaps doesn't have the experience to do so. I think that's spot on - I've seen exactly that at Cadwell, and the lower part of the circuit at Knockhill suffers the same way. Unsurprisingly perhaps, the same conditions cause no problems on a bike - single track vehicle so no real yaw moment able to arise. I've also had it happen on the road - after the M9 splits from the M80 Southbound at Stirling, the road curves gently right but with a strong camber drop running right to left (offside to nearside), just at a point where you get a lot of surface runoff due to poor drainage. A couple of years ago, I came in to that at a fairly moderate pace in my X5 (with winter tyres on) and was somewhat surprised to find the car trying to rotate about its axis, despite my pretty much straightlining the water on a neutral throttle. I'd just got that sorted out when I spotted a red 997 buried in the nearside armco…

It is a pretty bizarre story without more detail, but I dont see much point in speculating about it. The only important detail is that the chap and his child are OK. Exactly this. LindsayMac said: I do feel for the chap with this car, imagine his excitement on his new purchase, then the horror of a serious incident with his young daughter. So glad everyone involved is OK. Have to say though some of the comments will not be helping his situation. We all feel awful when something like this goes wrong whether our fault or not, he has chosen not to talk openly on a forum and we should respect his decision. Chin up DMC2 Funny you should post..I was just thinking about you (how's it going??) as my only experience of a GT3 on cup tyres in the wet was watching you in my rear mirror at a rain-lashed Knockhill. You seemed to have amazing grip given the conditions, and were absolutely flying, until that sudden spin.
