I was able to find used carpet pieces from a dismantler.
Leading evidence: 'Use carpet pieces' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean water' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. Ive used RIT synthetic RIT when dying polymer firearms and it requires some green or blue in addition to black to get it dark enough.

Ive used both the standard dye and the back to black.

Seems like my choices to correct it is replace the carpet or to redye it .
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

uplacolor vinyl & fabric spray which worked much better but still not great.
The previous owner of my 99 C4 must have parked the car with the rear window exposed to the sun . The grey carpet is almost white in color from UV fade . Seems like my choices to correct it is replace the carpet or to redye it .
Like most rear carpets it is physically in great shape because it rarely is used. So if good results can be had by using dye I would like to go that route . So have any of you gone this route ? What did you use ? How many coats ? Any other tips ? My plan is to have the windows tinted , plus the car is now stored indoors .
I've done both. Of course, replacement is expensive, but will give the best results. I was able to find used carpet pieces from a dismantler. Worked great!
I've also dyed carpet using special spray. ColorBond sells this type of paint, but doesn't offer medium gray similar to the carpet. They offer OEM "graphite grey" for dash and leather, but it is a little darker than the carpet. I was able to find some medium carpet paint from Advance Auto made by Dupli-Color. Blending is important to give it the even look without spotting.
I'm actually working on a video for my channel where I dye the grey carpeting on the door cards black using Rit. The rear cards separate so you can dye just the carpet but the carpeting on the door cards are plastic welded so you have to mask it off. Results are mixed and it will take A LOT of dye, patience AND LOTS of time. I would not recommend dyeing the carpeting as it will fade very quickly and/or stain your shoes if you don't rinse it right. I ended up buying a replacement from a donor. Worth every penny.
I am also monitoring several forums to see if I can purchase replacement carpet . Between cars being converted to race cars and cars being parted out hopefully I can find a set in good shape .
You beat me to it.
I tried using RIT on a BMW parcel shelf and it just didn't really stick. I then tried D
uplacolor vinyl & fabric spray which worked much better but still not great.
Using a gun to apply the RIT.
The finished RIT version which rubbed off anywhere I touched it.
The Duplicolor version.
Good tip regarding the RIT . There are lots of u-tube videos showing guys using RIT on auto carpet . But they don't mention what the carpet is made from .
Rayon. And RIT does say it will color rayon. It just doesn't do a good job adhering. In addition, rinsing it will take quite a bit of color with it, no matter how long you let it dry or whether you use the "Color Stay" additive. Oh well, lessoned learned. I'm all ears to better alternatives. I'd like to test different kinds of dye and determine best option. I'll be doing quite a bit of restoring/restomodding in the future and I want a color change to be viable choice.
What RIT are you guys using? Ive used RIT synthetic RIT when dying polymer firearms and it requires some green or blue in addition to black to get it dark enough.
I don't know whether or not BMW was using Rayon back then but it definitely wasn't any natural fiber.
My experiment was 10 years ago and I'm guessing I just grabbed whatever RIT I saw first at Rite-Aid or wherever. I didn't know there was a synthetic version until right now.
Dyed using RIT. After it dried, I rubbed down with a towel until no more dye came off. Then repeated the process two more times. Color stayed but texture isn't like original.
Ive used both the standard dye and the back to black. The b2b had the best results, but cost a whole lot more. Overall a mix of both, over a week did a good job. Not great, but good. Ill be dropping that video soon. But you can see the results in some of my recent videos if interested.
Rit is really for submersion dying , not spraying..
I've done car seats with it by removing the cover from the seat and soaking in a tub (Got from feed store)
for a couple hours, and I started with the water temp about 145 when mixing the dye and then put the seat cover in,
let soak for 3 hours, this was from a old chevy that had black cloth seats and I was just kinda boosting the color back from years of sun fade.
they got rinsed heavily for about 30 minutes, then soaked in clean water with white vinegar for a couple hours,
then re-rinsed and hung to dry.
Never had any bleed out of them. But it was quite a few years ago and dye like paint were better then.. When it wasnt as "safe"

This is the RIT I was referring to and this is an example of what that type of RIT is used for. I dyed the 3D printed sole of these Adidas 4D. You could probably do it in a tub and not really need to heat it, so at about 130 the color transfer was absolute. When I tried with regular RIT at temp, the transfer wasnt as clean. This is the end result.
If I go down the redye route I am leaning towards aerosol automotive dye vs RIT . Just seems like a better fit . But I have some leads on replacement carpet so for the time being in a hold pattern.
Replacement carpet is best option obviously. I'll look into aerosol automotive dye as a next attempt. Overall I'm not too happy with the results of RIT. Good thing this is my project car and not my daily. I can experiment with different things to see what will work for future projects.
