Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Check oil filter' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check oil filter' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.
Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.

Suggestion
Everybody has a different approach to how they want to service and maintain their car, but if the MAF has never been replaced, i would replace it.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi folks,
First time poster. Wondered if anyone had any ideas.
Getting the P0174 code only, so don't think it's the MAF sensor (as that would fire P0171 too right?) Where and how else should I check?
I'm a total newbie to working on my own car, so please be gentle.
There's a hissing noise from front left side of car that sounds like air escaping... probably unrelated but thought it was worth calling out.
Thanks in advance...
Congrats on the purchase. Love to hear more about the car!

Remember, its a 20+ year old car. Everybody has a different approach to how they want to service and maintain their car, but if the MAF has never been replaced, i would replace it. Its old and the center of many problems. Same can be said for all of the rubber and plastic parts that could also lead to the problem. No reason to worry. Just start refreshing parts as they fail or take a preventative approach by refreshing parts before they do. I prefer the latter.
If you didnt have it done on your pre purchase inspection, consider doing the following.
1. Test your oil to see whats in it.
2. Drop your sump to see if you have bits sitting in there
3. Check your oil filter to see what's in it.
4. Scope your bores from the sump to see what you got.
if all is satisfactory, then consider replacing the spark plugs, ignition coils, fuel injectors, IMSB, RMS, water pump and AOS with the UAOS if they haven't already been done.
Good advice but not much help for his current issue.
Diagnostics will save u lots of $.
I would guess that u have a vacuum leak. A shop can perform a smoke test to determine if u have a leak. They can also graph the maf sensor values for additional clues. My advice is to pay a little up front instead of guessing.
Just to add, the only thing in the front left of the car vacuum related is the brake booster. How do the brakes feel? Other then the rad fan i dont know what could be making noise up front.
