Hello everyone, I have a cdr30 non
bose
which I want to upgrade to something which can provide me
Apple CarPlay
. There are a few threads about this but a large majority are old.
What aftermarket do you think can fit ? Thanks a lot
It’s actually very easy! The hardest part is removing the trim and getting the old head unit out! There are any number of good YouTube videos on how to do that part. I went with a very basic unit from Dual. Its ”mechless” which just means no moving parts. (No CD player) I get all my music through Pandora or
Apple Music
. As far as sound quality, it’s just fair, but with the top down, what difference does it make? The screen is big and
CarPlay
gives me navigation that I didn’t have. Here’s a link to the installation kit I used.

I just installed a
Kenwood
DMX 8020 DABS and on the whole I am pretty pleased with it. Installation was somewhat simpler than I'd anticipated. As SGT1577 getting the old head unit out can be a bit tricky, but there are plenty of guides on Youthube which will help. I got a double DIN adapter set from InCarTec
Porsche 987 and 997 Single/ Double DIN stereo fitting kit (WITH CANBUS IGNITION) SILVER - InCarTec
and it was all pretty much plug and play. You'll find removing the bolts on the side a lot easier if you buy a 7mm ratcheting ring spanner/wrench.
My main problem was when I was half way through connecting the cables to the Kenwood once I'd installed it on the facia plate, and then I offered the whole thing up the to dash with the adapter installed to see if I needed to move the cables around a bit to make more space. I pushed it in to see if there was enough clearance at the back, and
CLICK
, the facia panel engaged with the side panel. The Kenwood was installed, but with only half the cables connected.
Unfortunately, looking at the installation instructions for the dash adapter panel, it clearly says you can't remove the radio once installed without removing the whole sub-dash. And the only instructions I found for removing the sub-dash started "first, remove the radio". Great. However, with a bit of judicious use of panel and pry tools, I got the front panel off OK, and from there it was easy to get the radio out. To make removal easier in the future, I cut the lugs on the glovebox side of the facia panel to about half their size with a pair of side cutters, and now I can get the front off easily, but it still fits snugly, and my modification is invisible once the leather-covered side panels are replaced.
The only significant criticism I have of the head unit is that it doesn't have a physical knob for volume, which would be a lot less fiddly than trying to change volume by touch. I'm thinking about how I can solve that problem: you can can control the head unit with an infra red remote, or interface it with steering wheel controls attached using an adapter plugged into the back. Unfortunately, my steering wheel doesn't have controls. Also, the display is fine, but it's not a patch on something like the display on an iPad. I would gladly have paid a bit more for a better screen, as it can be a bit tricky to see in sunlight with the hood down.
I placed the GPS antenna under the centre speaker grille, and it is invisible there and works great, and I did fabricate a little stainless steel earth/ground plate to go behind the A pillar to make sure the powered DAB antenna is properly connected. DAB in this car now works much better than in any other car I have had.
The Kenwood works OK with the stock speakers (and much better than the old head unit), but the woofers can't handle much volume. I will install an amp and some better speakers at some point.
At least now I can use car play, and very good it is too.
Wow thank you all for your complete replies
I came here to find basically the exact information. I have secured and am about to pick up a
987.2
with CRD30 AND
Bose
- It appears installing a modern headunit is "painless". I would greatly prefer to swap in a PCM3.0 head-unit and use any of the piggyback
Apple CarPlay
units instead.
Does anyone know if that is a possibility?
I have the Dynavin 8 Pro DB-PS unit arriving today. My Cayman R has the CDR-30 and Bose.

Just saw this. A bit pricey but

The new
PCCM Plus
looks really good and is apparently compatible with the
Bose system
without modification. I'm thinking that a backup camera can be used with it. Any suggestions? I'm thinking about making a move on it. Thanks!
Do you think that we can install it on à
997.1
?
Thanks
I agree, the PCCM does look great but only covers car up to 2008 so far. I spoke to
Porsche
customer service but they could not or would not say when the unit for
987.2
cars would, if ever, be released. So I moved on.
Yup, that's a
Bose subwoofer
. So you need to be looking in the
Bose
threads on removal. I suspect using a trim pry tool you can pop-off that carpeted hump and then you'll be able to remove the upholstered side panel the normal way. You might need to partially remove the sub-suffer trim too.
So here is my input. I finally got tired of no phone, pandora......... in my
987.2
with the have the sound package plus. I made the decision that modern technology was worth forgoing the radio information in the dash. So, here is what I did and no, I'm not a salesman for anything below. Just a satisfied customer.
I found a company in California called Car Audio Innovations (CAI). They sell double DIN stereos with custom wiring harnesses that fit your car and the head unit you decide to purchase. I'm a huge Alpine fan, but I purchased a
Kenwood
DDX9907, the wiring harness, XM satellite radio
plug
(goes from stock to the new radio, my car has stock XM) and the install kit (includes the bezzle). I also got over the phone advice on how to install it (it was at no charge. I installed radio, amp, DSP, speaker systems in a past life, but it never in a
Porsche
so it was comforting to know I could phone a friend). Their wiring harness fit like a glove. The instruction told me where to connect everything and in the end, WOW. Satisfied, absolutely.
Plug
and play, absolutely. They uploaded the
Porsche
crest so when the car starts up, the crest is the opening page for the stereo. I figured the head unit would be the first step to a larger project that would include new speakers and amp. For my taste, that being clean, full range music that doesn't make your ears bleed, I'm stopping where I am. Maybe in my older life I'll replace the speakers with something better and replace the ASK amp with a DSP enabled one, but for now, I'm thrilled.
Good Luck.
