This may help you.
Thanks Titusn I will read this tonight and let you know how I get progress

Awesome that you are stocking that sensor now considering it seems to be the issue more times than not on these
PDK
failures. Its crazy that
Porsche
has forcing people to replace the entire
PDK
unit at substantial cost just because of some small electrical part failure! It seems almost criminal as they absolutely know what the issue is, and that its possible to repair, but they replace it anyway. Its as insane as replacing the engine because one of the coil packs failed
My guess is
Porsche
has its reasons. However questionable they look to the owners. Opening
PDK
is a delicate business (but totally doable). Dealer techs are not trained to do it. So they decided to just not do that and offer full
PDK
replacement instead. As owners had no other choice (throw away your car?)... More money for PAG, more money for the dealer. Win-win in
Porsche
terms.
But yes, that sensor is a main suspect on older PDKs. That's why we engaged on this very extensive and expensive project. So now owners have a choice of fixing
PDK
for the fraction of the cost of total replacement. Win-win in T-Design terms
So the car was going limp while driving and getting stuck in gear and reduced engine and transmission error ? This is what I’m dealing with right now
That's the symptoms. When gear position sensor dies, gearbox CPU doesn't know what's going on, what gear the car in, and if gearshifts are performed correctly. So it let you drive in the selected gear in limp mode, and then won't let you drive at all.
Wonder if anyone in SoCal will open up and replace the part on my
pdk
I want my car back on the road
With the written fault codes the problem sounds like not working shift fork position sensor.
Just an update -
987 FL Boxster ZF 7DT 45FL
They claim to sell rebuilt ones for about 1/2 of Porsche's price (and the Porsche one will also be rebuilt..)
No personal experience and I hope not to have any personal experience.
@sk8Flyer
did you resolve your problem at the end?
My 997.2 PDK was throwing codes and wouldn't go into reverse, codes including a distance sensor failure code (P1734 the 4th shift rod sensor), I was convinced my distance sensor had failed.
I got the car to a shop that has experience in replacing distance sensors the mechanic tried to clear the code but he said P1764 keeps coming back (similar to your case) and wouldn't reverse. Then he did a recalibration and it is now working properly. I'm in an awkward position because there is no shop near me that does sensor replacement, if the shop isn't far away I'd just take the car back and drive it see if the PDK act up again but since the shop is far away I'm worrying if I take the car back and the sensor error shows up again I'll have to go through the trouble of getting the car to the shop, live without the car for a period of time etc... should I just replace the distance sensor at this point even if the car is working after a calibration?
I'm kinda curious about what P1764 could potentially point to, seems like there aren't a whole lot of cases involving P1764...
