Hi gang,
Reaching out to everyone per heated steering wheel swaps. There are admittedly a ton of threads out there on this, but this is definitely a case of “measure twice, order once” and I figured I’d put this out there to see if/what anyone has any experience with this in a 987 or a
981
.
For my
987.2
Boxster
, I’m hoping to inexpensively build a custom steering wheel using three different steering wheels:
1) My current sand beige round airbag (I’d really prefer black, but it’ll do for now)
2) A carbon fiber and Alacantra® heated steering wheel frame from a friend of mine that he got from Germany
3) A multifunction (MF)
MANUAL
heated steering wheel (heated button, black plastic center piece with MF buttons, internals)
The two key things that makes my build obscure is that I need a (1)
MANUAL
steering wheel (no PDK buttons…PDK steering wheels are common) and (2) that
I’m going from a Base steering wheel to MF
. Usually a MF to MF swap or a Base to Base isn’t a big deal, but Base to MF seems doable yet unclear (Suncoast Parts sells the part for $$$, so ideally it could work).
Again, this is does not involve the more expensive and newer SPORT steering wheels that have all the metal trim.
Given that I don’t use an OEM head unit anymore, I could live without MF functionality but will see how that shakes out; it would be nice to have a volume knob as my Sony HU is button only, but we'll see. I’ve also learned first-hand from other installs that Porsche does NOT include you the extra wiring in your wiring harnesses if you don’t originally have the given equipment.
So I want to be sure that others have indeed been able to add a heated steering wheel in my situation (totally base steering wheel).
I know I’d need the following:
Donor heated steering wheel
Heated clockspring (What exact part can I use? Can I use one from a Macan or a Cayenne?)
PIWIS (to code everything) - done
Ideally I wouldn’t need the steering wheel adapter from GPS in Hong Kong in this case?
Ideally not a different control box in the steering column? (I think that’s the part that the PIWIS codes)
Anyhow, if anyone has any suggestions/thoughts before I buy a used clockspring, steering wheel, etc. — please let me know. Cheers and thanks.
