Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Run cable' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'same connector' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check 996 forum maybe' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I ended up using the phone connector, just followed the link that I posted on post #5.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I am trying to hardwire a radar detector in a 2001 carrera, but I am having trouble finding a switched source. I did a search, and hardwire it into the auto dimming mirror harness seems to be the most popular way. This car being an 01, was the dimming mirror an option? I can't find any harness in the dome lights.
There has to be a switched source in the fuse box somwhere, but I can't find anything.
Thanks
Hopefully you are using a hardwire kit with a resistor, or you can solder connectors onty a ciggy lighter adaptor. You will need to reduce the voltage or risk blowing out the unit.
All you need is a cheap test light that you connect to ground. Look for the ciggy lighter circuit. Check that it powers down with the key off. Then turn on the accessory position, touch to the contacts in the fuse box.
I would not tap into another harness. I'd go straight to the fuse box. Dunno where it is. Check the 996 forum maybe....
Searching in the correct forum helps too, I found these instructions here:

I'll give it a try, hopefully it will work.
What?? Blow what unit, the radar detector? Or something in autodimming circuit?
You certainly don't want to add any inline resistance between the 12V power source and the radar detector, they're made to run straight off the 12V bus off a car, even though it can sometimes get up to 15V sometimes. Car electronics are made to operate at these voltage above 12V.
Now, I would be careful not to overload the autodimming mirror circuit. I'm not sure of the ampacity that's sourcing it, or what gauge wire runs up to that area, but unless it's super small gauge (24 or less) and you have a gigantor radar detector, you won't be pulling so much current to blow anything or pull so much that you drop the voltage up to that point by pulling excess current thru the smaller gauge. So I'm guessing it'll be alright, but just take a voltage measurement at the radar detector while it's powered on, and when it's powered off, and make sure the drop isn't more than a half volt or so.
For what it's worth, the ciggy stays on even with the key off and out. You'll have to find another switched source.
BTW, welcome to Rennlist!
I'm going to do the same thing on my '01, but haven't gotten around to it.
I used the phone connector by the radio in my 04. Then ran the cable under the dash. Used a credit car to tuck the cable under the a pillar. 20-30 min job at most.
If you don't have an auto dimming mirror then your next best source would be the little ambient light on the bottom of the rear view mirror mount. (I have an auto dimming mirror, but I assume all cars have the light). It's a little yellow light, just like the ones in the door handles, etc. You can tap into that harness easily. I have a thread w/ pics, under "hardwiring a passport"
Here's a link to a guy that sells connectors. This should give you some ideas on how it's done.

Peavy,
The wire to the dimmer board is small, but keep in mind that the power cable is actually phone line, really small gauge.
So far I have had no issues with mine wired to the ambient light.
Function12,
Do you have any pics of this phone line you tapped?
Thanks for the welcomes and replies everyone. I ended up using the phone connector, just followed the link that I posted on post #5. This is probably the same connector that function12 used.
Thanks for the help.
Easy job once you find some place to connect it.
