Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

That ignorance/lack of documentation aside for a moment, the system is installed on US-bound cars and does work, very well inded.
Leading evidence: 'Install on us-bound cars and does work, very well inded' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Install on us-bound cars and does work, very well inded' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My mother's Avalon has a navagation system with the following safety quirks...
Everytime you start the car it makes you agree to a warning not to stare at it when you should be driving.
While the car is moving most input options are disabled to prevent the driver from screwing with it, unfortunately neither can the passenger.
I was interested whether the PCM has these quirks (which don't apply to portable units of course). I assume this would be a US specific question.
PCM has a similar warning but it is just for the display. That is, if you are navigating to a destination and stop (turn off) the car, when you restart the car the warning is there and you have to respond to see the display BUT even if you don't respond, the navigation commands still continue. You hear them and can see the pictograph turns displayed on the dash in front of you.
Secondly, you can change anything while driving. I haven't found anything I (or my wife) couldn't change while the car is moving.
That said, I'll bet the Avalon Nav system has features that you would like to have in PCM. Still, PCM Nav is an effective system.

Thanks for the info,
Glad to hear you can operate the nav while moving, much more usable than the Avalon setup. Too bad about the startup warning but at least you get navigation, still its just one more thing to do after starting the car.
I wish someone could submit a PDF of the PCM user manual. /fckeditor/editor/images/smiley/MWPX/teeth_smile.gif
The manual for the previous version is in the files section of this web site. It refers to using CDs but the current system uses a single DVD. I think that is the only difference I have noticed so far.
A PDF of the PCM manual would blow out my dowloading capability fast. The manual is thicker than the owners manual, and it will probably take us the life of the car to fully digest it. Still, some hands on support by someone with experience or direct knowledge is a great help. We have visited our dealershiip and received expert help with things we need to know and may not bother with a lot of the other nice to know stuff.
I looked at the new PCM manual and it is different than the older one here - especially about options that I considered important to deciding about the PCM on a new Cayman. My recommendation if you are really considering the system is to asked your dealer for the new manual and spend some time in a room somewhere looking at it.
Hopefully at some point we will get the new version online here at Caymanclub.net
Granted the PCM manual is, shall we say, detailed, but don't be too daunted because half of it is in a second language (don't remember which one, maybe French.) and part of it is dedicated to the extended navagation features. So, if you don't choose that option and don't read French the manual becomes more manageable. It's best read sitting in the driver's seat while pusing buttons. And the British accent setup choice is a hoot.
Have fun!
Gene is right - thank you - spend time it the car looking at it. I did a pretty good job of running down the dealers the car battery just messing around with it.
I don't think the NAVI system is 'real time.' That is, it cannot 'spot' upcoming traffic congestion. As I recall the manual though once you spot the problem the NAVI system can provide you with alternative routes. All you have to do is press the Diversion button.
You're saying that we have to be in the congestion first, then the PCM would give us an alternate route?
isn't it a little too late?
any explanation why the one in JC's review able to spot a congestion?
I am suggesting that once you are in it, with NAVI guidance you don't have to stay in it. If you have an off ramp or the ability to make a left or right turn, then you may have alternatives. I have not read JC's review, so I can't comment on that.
I believe the Cayman PCM uses TMC broadcasts from supported RDS radio stations to plot the traffic snarl-ups.

As a person who picked up a Cayman S at the factory in June 2006, I can assure you from personal experience that the car in U.S. trim does indeed possess the capability of dynamic traffic rounting using the TMC system. I worked brilliantly, just as Clarkson observed in his report. Sadly, tragically, the car arrived in the US but the system does not function. Whether this is because there is no carrier / broadcast outlet carrying the information in the USA or for some other reason I do not know. Neither my dealer nor PCA could even name the system used, and of course the PCM manual (at least for the North American car) makes no reference whatever to the capability. That ignorance/lack of documentation aside for a moment, the system is installed on US-bound cars and does work, very well inded. If anyone knows more about this, please post!
