If in the market for a 996 turbo tip I'd just ask Tom at 911 Virgin to do me a deal on the elective repair work which he'd provde any buyer a list of works needed over next 12/18 months - as and when the repair work required.

Just to add changing the oil from a 0w 40w to a thicker visocisty oil and regular use can get rid of misting or even a leak on a mezger.

I paid top whack for it as there were only two for sale in the UK at the time and it was the best one on the market - and that is my point, even the best cars need good money to get them to somewhere near actual mint, and the truth is it's still not perfect, it's good but it's got 35yrs of "patina".

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

What a cracking purchase for someone. I had a manual but have driven the tip and it really suits the turbo engine. Whats most interesting is that I can see that this is a really good example but still being sold as seen with no warranty. If you're buying at this end of the market expect to spend £££ to get them into perfect condition. In todays classic Porsche market can't think of more Porsche for the money. 996 Turbo Coupe Tiptronic (2002) 996 Turbo Coupe. 5-speed Tiptronic transmission. First registered 30/05/2002 02-registration. Finished in Basalt Black metallic with full Black leather 911virgin.com

POST 2Original post

The obvious answer to why they're selling it on those terms (and I've heard other dealers actually state this) is that they would have to spend an amount of money on it to get it up to a condition where they can offer a proper warranty, which would result in a screen price that no one would pay. There is no such thing as a cheap 911, especially a Turbo. I looked at a 930 months ago that needed work and the dealer said he'd sell it at the screen price and then do a deal (with some discount) on the work, he wouldn't do the work first and add it to the screen price because no one would pay it. I've posted this before but my 930 has cost £25k to get it up to perfect condition but if I sold it tomorrow I bet I wouldn't get any of it back because people would say it's overpriced if I added that to what I paid for it. If I were looking for a 996T then I'd possibly buy the one in your link, but accept that I'd quickly be upside down on it financially.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Its had quite a few of the major repairs associated ie gearbox rebuild, new condensors. Agree you could still easily drop £10k to £20k in any classic 911. Say the turbos need replacement thats £10k plus just there. RMS oil leak which does happen to turbo and GT3s again could be another £10k plus. Looking at the pics though for a 22 year old 996 its worn its miles very well both inside and outside. The interior looks like its done half the mileage. Last owner 12 years. History on the button. If in the market for a 996 turbo tip I'd just ask Tom at 911 Virgin to do me a deal on the elective repair work which he'd provde any buyer a list of works needed over next 12/18 months - as and when the repair work required. 911 Virgin as good as gold will do the work at a very fair rate as they have their own workshop and know 911s backwards. They'd not take in a money pit 911 which of course any old 911 turbo can be even a £200k 993 turbo. £25k on your 930 to get the car perfect sounds like a bargain tbh. Old 911s both air cooled and water cooled cost £££ to keep in good condition. I bet that car sold by next week

No such thing as a cheap 911. It's always gonna be a 60k+ sports car to maintain.

POST 6Original post

I bought the most expensive 996 Turbo in the UK in 2022. It had 8k miles on it , bit of a gamble but so far it’s paid off , so far I’ve spent about £200 on 2 oil changes and a gearbox fluid change. I’ve done another 8k miles and this year a big trip to Sweden covering 2000 miles with zero issues and 140mph in Germany for a stint. I reckon it’s still worth what I paid for it so another way of approaching a purchase. I do all my work on all my vehicles so that does save a good bit of labour

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Always the best route is to buy the very best example available like you have Monty lets see a pic. Your over all cost if ownership shd be less than the 996 turbo I’ve posted up on the one proviso which is you say do no more than 1500 to 2000 miles a year. In fact this way you may even make a healthy profit if you do ever sell in the future as these are under appreciated by the general market at the moment mainly because many of the examples out there aren't in tip top mechanical condition. They suffer boost leaks for fun at this age. But for someone on a smaller budget who can do the remedial work required in stages or like you DIY what a fantastic dd to add another 100,000 miles on through rain, sleet and snow with zero guilt about adding mileage

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Sold in 24 hours! Someone’s bought a beauty there congrats. Hard to find them in this condition especially in black which is so hard to keep in tip top condition like this one looks.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

It’s a gem. The engine and gearbox worth more than the sale price!

and a good spec, full electric memory heated seats which is a rarity

POST 12Original post

My experience tells me that either way you look at it that’s a £45k car, but at least the new owner gets to decide how and when he spends the £15-20k. Unless hes a handy home mechanic and then it might turn out to be a genuine bargain. Or he is already at the limit of his budget and he runs it into the ground like a lot of people seem to do with 996s and then it becomes a money pit. The 996 has always got a lot of stick but to be fair in general it was built to a very high standard and now 25yrs on a lot are still out there despite being run with minimal maintenance.

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'll ask Tom when I next speak to him what he felt needed doing on this beautiful 996 turbo over the next 12-24 months. It was a give away condtion wise cosmetically hence I'd be surpised if the mainetenance spend at a good indy like 911 Virgin or say Porsche Torque is any more £8k-£9k over the next few years. I'd guess probably just a bit of misting around a through bolt or RMS which is caused by the turbo barely doing any mileage in the last 12 years. They need to be used. If you use an OPC for servicing yes I can easily see £10k-£20k out the bin. Just to add changing the oil from a 0w 40w to a thicker visocisty oil and regular use can get rid of misting or even a leak on a mezger.

POST 14Original post

I don't know 911V at all, but my guess is that it wasn't economical for them to get it up to where they could sell it at their usual standard with a warranty. That doesn't mean it's a bad car, it's just that it's not economical for them, whereas someone else could take it on and end up with a decent car. I'm not being derogatory to the car or 911V, I'm sure it's simply just an economics decision. I also stand by what I said, I've genuinely never come across a cheap turbo, or any 911 for that matter, one way or another they're all going to cost you roughly the same to get them to a comparable standard. In fact again in my experience anyone buying a cheap one and wanting to get it up to a good standard is likely to end up spending more than if they'd just bought a decent one from a reputable garage in the first place. I added up what I've spent this year and it surprised me, a fair bit of it is elective and preventative, but still...

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I've used all the indies in Herts and N & W London. You'll struggle to find better than 911 Virgin and on air cooled like your 930 they are postively amazing. They currently have a 911 SSE cab which I keep staring at and I'm in Dubai like you! When in UK I've run a 997.1 turbo ((basically a 996.3 turbo) as a daily for 17 years plus. Estimate probably £2k a year for the routine maintenance and wear and tear. I don't think these sort of running costs that bad for a 400-500bhp sportscar. By comparison my 944 turbo 250bhp was far more expensive to run.
