I am preparing my
2008 Cayman S
for the track and wondering if I should do an AC delete. This will impact what parts I need to get when placing an order for the underdrive pulley. Does anyone have any experience with the benefits of doing this? I know my AC Pump is on its way out in the
next
year, so should I completely remove it?
I see you have a
987.1
so I'm not sure if the following would apply to you.
Years ago I pondered what to do when my AC pump showed signs of failing and as an interim measure I wondered what would happen if it seized. Would the car be drivable? I figured dedicated track cars must have a way to eliminate that extra weight but how would that affect routing the serpentine belt without that pump's pulley?
I never found an answer but I did find that, on a
987.2
, there is a breakaway inside the pulley hub that allows the pulley to freewheel in case the pump seizes. So using this breakaway you could eliminate the pump drag and leave the belt geometry alone You just would not eliminate the weight of the pump.
In a working pump you can disassemble the hub and remove the breakaway part so the pulley is no longer driving the pump. I'll have to look for some photos to refresh my memory on how to do that.
On a
987.1
there is a electromagnetic clutch inside the pump, so with it deactivated the drag might already be minimal. On a
987.2
there is no clutch so there always is some drag. But I bet there's still some sort of breakaway inside the pulley hub so the engine can run with a seized pump
The 2012
Spyder
had the option of a/c delete, so if you decide to go that route it could be done with
Porsche
equipment.

This question mostly comes from me planning to buy the Tarret underdrive pulley and belt, where I will need to select whether I do or don't have the A/C. The current A/C on its way out is also play some role. I'm mostly wondering if I should just go with the no A/C option when getting the underdrive pulley, and if this has any performance gain?
I had an RSS under pulley installed on my
986
. It made more difference than all the other incremental modifications I installed. I could feel the difference immediately, the car will tach up quicker. Lowering the parasitic drag is a change that delivers. How much? I don't know I never put the engine on a dyno. I can also report that the change had no effect on running temperature or the AC which I know doesn't matter in your situation.
