I have been driving around without the carpet sound dampening cover on my
2008 Cayman S
to see how the sound would change if I were to get a glass engine cover. I've really enjoyed being able to hear a lot more of the engine inside the cabin, so it's safe to say I will be getting one soon.
Opening up the engine cover, I think the black engine parts don't look the best. Ive seen images on google of red and silver intake manifolds and think I'll paint mine in a similar way. It's my first car, and I've never done any sort of car modification before so don't want to accidentally damage anything taking out the intake manifold. Are there any videos out there that show how to do this from the start? The ones I found had it partly disassembled already. And what paint should I use for it, or is there any other method I should use to change the colour?
I'd also like to clean/detail the engine, what would be the best way to do this without any fancy cleaning chemicals or tools? I know
dish
soap can damage exterior paint on cars, would that extend further to include not using it for the engine as well? And again, any other tips for this part is also appreciated.
As well as cleaning and painting the intake manifold, is there anything else I should consider for this?
Here's the example photo I've been looking at:
I cleaned mine with
Simple Green
after lightly spraying with water, spray on
simple green
, allow some time, couple minutes then brush with a detailing brush, rise and blow dry with compressor.
6 is a lot nicer looking than the 4
I can’t believe they placed that heat soak on the top. Unless there’s something coming from the inlets. Never owned one so I have no idea
If you want the appearance without painting, the guy who makes the clear covers also makes a good looking set of valve cover toppers and a centerpiece that provides instantaneous gratification. There is also an optional light kit that comes on when the cabin lights operate. I'm against adding weight for appearance, but these are negligible. Have you seen this on ********?
The only companies i've seen are only selling the cover. The glass cover is already close to 2 grand and I'm not too keen on increasing that even more with extra cosmetic parts at this point, hence why I'm going the painting route.
The 2 covers I've found are from DetailedWorks987 and CarGym
My mistake, the clear cover I was thinking of is here on P9. Here is a link to his post about the centerpiece. There is also a link in the thread with pricing for the cover alone.

Looks great, is it louder and hotter in the cabin?
No neither, you wouldn't know you have anything different.
The photo I included was a reference photo for what I would like mine to look like. I would suggest taking the top carpet panel off and driving like that to get a feel for what the glass cover is like. It's completly reversable so no harm in doing it.
There is definitely an increase in both sound and temperature. It's not too much louder, but you can hear a lot more of what is going on in the engine. And I've noticed the engine warms up faster and can take longer to cool down, but no overheating issues. Engine temp never goes above 80 degrees celcius.
