Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

8 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi everyone, I was hoping new tires might quiet this annoying rattle, but no luck. The Ohlins coilovers aren't helping, but they didn't really make it worse either. The source is at the remote locking sensor at the front center of the dash. When I push down on the sensor or the trim piece around it, the rattle goes away. I pulled the trim piece off, put a bunch of hush tape around the edges and where it contacts the sensor. No luck. I pulled the trim piece off, and then pulled up the sensor so it's only held on by the wires. Still rattling! If I push down on the black plastic bezel that is mounted to the metal frame of the dash, that seems to quiet it. Anyone else had this problem? Any suggestions to stop the rattle short of pulling the entire dash?!? (I'm not going to do that)

POST 2Original post

Can you clarify what makes the noise go away? I had all of these apart last week so most of this is fresh in my head. There's a screw below the piece pictured that may be loose. You can remove the center piece easily with the two screws. If it's still making noise see if the screw below needs to be tightened.

When I apply pressure while driving, the rattle stops. I saw on the parts catalog drawing that there is a single screw holding the black plastic frame to the structure below. I agree that if this screw was loose, the parts could rattle. What is the center piece you are referring to? Where are the two screws? Thanks! - EDIT nevermind, I see the two screws. look like Torx. parts catalog shows one screw in the image but lists qty of 2 in the table.

POST 4Original post

The silver piece that's visible in your photo is held in by two screws and once you remove it, there's a single screw below that secures the dash to the cross member.

I removed the two screws from the black plastic bezel around the silver plate and the key remote sensor. I can't remove it because the defroster vents are in the way. I slid some cloth underneath the black bezel and did a quick drive and the rattle is gone. So I would like to put some hush tape on the bottom side of the bezel and then put everything back. But I have to get the bezel out to do that. How do the defroster vents come out? I assume there are plastic tabs, but I don't want to go prying and snap anything. Thanks!

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I fixed it! To get the silver plate out along with the plastic bezel, I had to pry up the defroster vents. I read lots of posts about how to remove them completely. I was able to pop out the first two clips on each side, from the center, using plastic pry tools. I didn't take much force. Then I took the two screws out, using a magnet to get them out after loosening them first. Now I could sneak out the black bezel and silver plate. I put hush tape on the bottom wherever it looked like it touched the dashboard or cross member beneath. Put it back in, screwed it down, took and drive, and now I only can hear the second, third and fourth loudest rattles in the interior.

POST 7Original post

Ha, one of the benefits of my interior overhaul and motivation to strip it down as far as I did was to redo wiring and address anything that had the potential to rattle. There's a bar in the headliner, that's a common one and if you get noise over bumps and such then that would be the rear window.

I think that's the second loudest rattle in my 996...oh wait now it's the loudest rattle. Got a few other issues to deal with first. Cheers, thanks RyanH
