Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I have changed the fluid and filter in box, checked levels (took approximately 5.5-6litres) done a visual check on wiring to multi plug & gear link wiring
Leading evidence: 'Check levels (took approximately 5.5-6litres) done a visual' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'hall effect sensor, look' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check engine mil' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I’ve already removed the pan and replaced the filter so that part is easy I’m just a little scared about removing the valve block, we’ll see when I get the availability/cost of the parts thanks again

Suspected cause
It's two wire, so probably a hall effect sensor, look for a sine wave signal.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi Everybody I need some advice/help. I have a 996/1 1999 with the 5HP19 ZF 5 speed auto gearbox, driving along and auto box looses all power (and 4gear light and drive light flashes).switch off engine and restart no drive at all. In manual mode starts off in 2nd gear (no Drive) only selects 1st &2nd but without any drive. if I take revs to app. 4k then 4th and D lights flash
EBD2 codes reveal P0717 & P0722 both refer to "input speed sensor?" fault

ive read alot online but just don't know where to start Im a fairly good mechanic used to working on older cars and auto electrics. I just want some guidance when to start like where are pins 16,23,44 located etc.
Or do I just take the box out and have it rebuilt ?
16,23,44 are pins on the transmission ECU:

I would start the engine with a scope across 16 and 44. It's two wire, so probably a hall effect sensor, look for a sine wave signal. If no signal then it's dead and needs to be replaced.
In fact, ZF Parts catalogue shows it is a Hall effect (
https://aftermarket.zf.com/remotemedia/pdfc-media/pdfc-files/pdfc-downloads-1/2017-2/pdfc-5hp19.pdf
):
The parts catalogue shows the sensor is above the valve block, so that would need to come out. I don't think there are any seals between the valve body and transmission - it relies on the surface finish of the faces,
OIl is probably Esso LT71141, the same as the 5HP24.
It's a fairly invasive job, but as you're not splitting the valve block (make sure you don't undo all the bolts!) it just requires care and cleanliness. I used these guys when I rebuilt my 5HP24

Hope this helps
Thanks for that. I’ve got in contact with ZF in Nottingham to see if they carry any parts and a general internet search as well. I’ve already removed the pan and replaced the filter so that part is easy I’m just a little scared about removing the valve block, we’ll see when I get the availability/cost of the parts thanks again
It could be wiring not sensor - so worth completing the diagnosis before throwing parts at it. If you don't have a scope a multimeter on AC should do the job.
JPAT were great when I dealt with them, so worth a call with the part number if it is needed.
