I gave into replacing my factory drain
plug
and got the aluminum (magnet) drain. The first unit cracked and leaked……was given another “improved” unit and used that a few times till…..yup AGAIN cracked and leaked!!!! So annoyed!!! I found this stainless steel unit and WOW, LOVE IT!!!! It has a nice shallow 17mm head and no it does not protrude any more than other parts of the car.
Listen there is a fine line of feeling the washer crush squeeze and the stripping of threads from over torque. Any person that has changed sparkplugs will know two things need to occur. One a good seal and feel of the crush washer seating down and second the need for a good tightening torque so that nothing comes loose down the road. The same theory applies to drain plugs; typical by torque application or up to a one quarter turn to seating the aluminum gasket.
The new stainless steel unit also has a magnet!! Just thrilled along with my titanium lug bolts this whole thing is settled! I highly recommend this unit and would love to know anyone else’s thoughts! Spare me the dissimilar metal theory….
spark plugs
go into aluminum heads all the time!
Keep on enjoying the ride!!!
I also had one of the aluminum/magnet ones crack and leak, so I had to go back to the OEM
plug
. I don't really care for those, though, since they are so soft and it's easy to strip the hex. So this sounds like a good solution. Thanks for the referral!
@raknaks
Did you torque the stainless steel plug to the same 37 FtIbs? and since its steel, its reusable unlike the aluminum ones, correct?
I've used the
plug
and crush washer from
FCP Euro
twice now and it has worked fine. I'm pretty sure it's aluminum, but never really thought about it. I just torque it to the specified 37 ft-lbs.
I did same except from
pelican
part. 37ft-ibs and everything is clean.
The S/S is fine as long as you don't cross thread it. So that means you do the oil changes and don't let some knurled head B tech screw it up.
Sorry for bumping an old thread but since its on topic thought i’d ask here for advice. My 2014
Boxster S
came with unknown miles on the previous oil. The drain
plug
was definitely not leaking since it was bone dry under there and i had driven it a couple of times. I did the oil change and made the mistake of reusing the previous
plug
and gasket (i know) and it started to leak very slowly. I think it was the OEM steel
plug
. I bought another steel one (has the magnet) with new copper gasket from
Amazon
. Quickly swapped the
plug
without losing too much oil and replaced the exact amount lost with fresh oil. Torqued to 30nm and it leaked. Cleaned up and increased to 40nm and leaked. Cleaned up and increased to the OEM spec 50nm and still leaks. Very slowly but its there. Any suggestions about what I should try
next
? Maybe try an aluminum
plug
? Rubber seal? Teflon tape? I am hoping the pan isnt hosed. Thanks for any help.
I never had a leak using OEM
plug
and crush washer. However all of my crush washers were aluminum, not copper. I'll also admit that I never have torqued it. Just got it tight and about 1/4 turn. Enough to crush the washer and form a seal.
RSchwerer is right, you need an aluminum crush washer. New one for each change.
