I fitted a new maf from a Bosche dealer which was £130 rather than the £700 that the OPC wanted just for the part.

I certainly wasn't looking for a full Porsche history with mine , all I want to know is that the oil has been changed when needed with good oil, everything else is bolt on fixes but you can't fix poor oil intervals.

I'll give an example, about 5 years ago my engine management light started coming on, I used my durametric to see it was idle range fuel trims causing the lamp.

Suggestion

Another time I put the car in deliberatly with very low rear brake pads which they didn't notice, seeing as most of the work they do on a service is inspection related, with the only physical work being the oil change, I just feel ripped off.

I have the above car, it has 44,000 miles and hasn't been used for 2 years, I am wondering if anyone will advise me, how much it matters if I do the oil and filter change including a small service myself?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have the above car, it has 44,000 miles and hasn't been used for 2 years, I am wondering if anyone will advise me, how much it matters if I do the oil and filter change including a small service myself? As I'm of the understanding that a good service history via a porsche dealer or porsche specialist is paramount. I'm no mechanic, but can manage the above plus changing spark plugs, any advice appreciated guys.

POST 2Original post

It's only 'paramount' if you plan on selling the car at some time and want to get the best price. The low mileage will always attract buyers but your pool will be reduced if the service history isn't up to scratch. Even a big service, by a specialist, before sale won't plug that gap. These cars don't like being left idle so no use in 2 years will already be enough to put some people off. If the car is in ultra mint condition and special enough to become part of a collection it might not matter too much but most future owners will be buying the car to use and will be looking for one that's been well maintained. It's obviously your call but if the service history to date is good I wouldn't change that for the sake of spending a few extra quid now.

POST 3Original post

Take photos and keep the receipt for the oil and filters. I place the old filter in a ziplock bag and keep it until the next service. I can't see why it would bother anyone at all as long as you are confident and do the above. Write in the service book too. I do mine and it's a 15k mile minter.

POST 4Original post

I'm having this debate with myself at the moment, I know that my own knowledge and work standard is better than what an OPC would do, however most people would say as T8 puts it my cars service history won't be up to scratch if I do it myself. I'll give an example, about 5 years ago my engine management light started coming on, I used my durametric to see it was idle range fuel trims causing the lamp. At the time I put the car in to my local OPC as a minor service was due, while it was in the lamp came on, they told me I needed 4 new lambda sensors which they could supply and fit for 2.5k. I declined and looked at the data myself, everything was within Porsche spec. I did notice the maf voltage was at the high end of Porsche spec. I fitted a new maf from a Bosche dealer which was £130 rather than the £700 that the OPC wanted just for the part. The new maf returned the fuel trims to zero and the car has been fine since. So I fixed the actual fault for a fraction of the price. if I'd let them do it they'd have replaced the lambda the also needed to replace the maf and I'd of had a 3k bill to show the next owner! Another time I put the car in deliberatly with very low rear brake pads which they didn't notice, seeing as most of the work they do on a service is inspection related, with the only physical work being the oil change, I just feel ripped off. Since Porsche has put the price of a minor service up from 380 to 750 and thats with me supplying my own Mobil oil I just can't bring myself to pay it just because the next owner thinks OPC is the best. It's a mad world!

POST 5Original post

Honestly, do it yourself. For warranty on a newish car you might have to use OPC but these are classic cars now and owned by enthusiasts. I certainly wasn't looking for a full Porsche history with mine , all I want to know is that the oil has been changed when needed with good oil, everything else is bolt on fixes but you can't fix poor oil intervals. Keep receipts and take dated photos of the procedure you're doing, who can argue with that.
