It was still an issue in 2017 and the issue is still present now.
Leading evidence: 'still present now' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'still present now' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace gearbox oil and all was ok' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Did think about the oil change and a cable change too.

I feel it will need shimming in the long run but I also need new suspension all around too.

Essentially they have modified the "bolt" by using a smaller roller and this allows the driver when shifting to overthrow the selector and it causes all sorts of issues with every gear not just isolated to 2nd.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi all, I’m new here, my first Porsche (life dream) but finally got my first 3 weeks ago. 996.2 C2. Unfortunately it’s jumping out of second gear. Car has tons of receipts and history and is in great shape, but receipts show that this issue has been looked into in 2016 and the gearbox was rebuilt. It was still an issue in 2017 and the issue is still present now. Has anyone seen this before? Thanks.
Hopefully that fixes it for you, otherwise you could speak to these guys. They specifically mention 2nd gear so seems a common issue, not cheap if it requires a rebuild though.

I recently found out that my 1999 c4 had a brand new gearbox in 2005 on 48k miles.... apparently that was 2nd gear issues.... also got a copy of the bill from Porsche Wilmslow for £7500 incl a clutch kit and labour.......!!!!
Oooo wow!!
I spoke to Sport & Classic today about looking into it, they are going to see if there is a fix without a rebuild. I have to send my old invoice to them and they will see what they can do.
Interesting!!
Defo one to try first then! That would be a super easy temp cure/cheaper too. I feel it will need shimming in the long run but I also need new suspension all around too. So it could be a good one, for pushing it on a bit!
It might be worth just buying a new spring and putting an 8mm ball bearing in the top first.
These are the parts from Porsche.
They also sell an 8mm ball bearing, so they know the issue well.
As these age the spring loses its strength, not sure what the GBox one really offers, their description doesn't really make sense to me. New detent and spring should do the same if not better.
Also make sure you have PTX fluid in the car, other fluids can magnify the issue you have.

The "solution" offered by them is not a good one at all. Essentially they have modified the "bolt" by using a smaller roller and this allows the driver when shifting to overthrow the selector and it causes all sorts of issues with every gear not just isolated to 2nd.
The function of this device is a shift arrestor or stop. It makes sure that when the gear is selected that the driver can not press the synchro down onto the gear or damage the shift fork by leaning on the lever, it also stops the selector fork overthrowing the shift sleeve and bottoming out past the end stop on some of the gears, it actually goes in with that much force it breaks the end stop teeth off. There is nothing actually holding the shift sleeve in place once engaged other than the force of rotational torque and the angles on the engagement teeth. Yes the selector rod has a detent to hold that in place but that is just to make sure it is held central to the shift sleeve or it would burn out. The end result is that these gearboxes require specialist knowledge and tooling to correct the gear stack height and make sure they engage correctly. We have done these gearboxes since 2001 and know them very well. Shame the parts are so expensive but they have been at least 3 revisions I know about that all make positive improvements on the original design.
