my 993 tip was a bit like this - i did two things, disconnect battery which resets everything including the tip brain and also top up the gearbox oil, mine was like 300ml short and that made a heck of a difference.

The best place to start with the gearbox would be to change the oil and filter and see how it goes from there.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

3 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello, My 2003 911 996 C2 Targa Tiptronic has developed an issue when changing from 3rd - 2nd gear pulling up to the lights (or 5th - 2nd if pulling up sharply). It’s noticeably clunky. Fluid was changed 3 years ago, and the indie specialist here suggests either changing it again, or that the engine and gearbox mounts might need changing. I currently don’t know if these are the original ones from 2003. Has anyone else experienced this, and/or is there some kind of update around? I’d like to avoid expensive (and potentially unnecessary) repairs. Tia!

POST 2Original post

Hi, the way to spot worn engine mounts is by looking at the back of the car where the exhaust tail pipes sit, if there is a large gap between the bumper recess and where the exhaust tips hang say more than an inch i'd suspect they are worn. The best place to start with the gearbox would be to change the oil and filter and see how it goes from there.
