Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I ran Falken 453's on a corvette on 17" rims and they suited the car superbly but had large sidewalls.

Suggestion
You wouldn’t want to mix brands between axles, so you either replace an average tyre with an average tyre on the back, or replace all 4 with something better.

Thanks, I'm going to change all 4 and advice on sizes would be great.

However, I don't want to shortchange the car so should I put new Falkens on the rear or replace with something else and then fit the same when the front ones need replacing?
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi, some advice, please. My, new to me, 996 currently runs on Falkens and the rear ones will shortly need replacing. It's a weekend and sunny day driver and have I no intention on doing any track days. However, I don't want to shortchange the car so should I put new Falkens on the rear or replace with something else and then fit the same when the front ones need replacing?
hiya Falken are a solid brand, as the rears always wear out faster then the fronts,
subject to depth
which Falken's do you have ?
17 or 18s
replace the rears with like for like so that you have a matching set then change next to another brand should you wish to
never mix brands
Personally I’m a tyre nerd and think they’re incredibly important to all aspects of the driving experience (as well as safety).
Falken are
okay.
But you can do better. You wouldn’t want to mix brands between axles, so you either replace an average tyre with an average tyre on the back, or replace all 4 with something better.
Do you know what the date code is on the ones you’re not immediately planning to replace? If they’re 4 years old or more I’d say it’s decision made - just change the whole lot.
Have all sorts of nuanced thoughts on the options available for 17” rims - but will hold off on those till you ask for them!
At the top level you have two options:
1) go N rated (as 911UK posted above)
2) go for a newer model
1) were developed with Porsche and are special compounds/patterns designed to be optimal for
certain criteria specified by Porsche
at the time. Note that these aren’t necessarily the criteria you would choose for a tyre of your own, and usually are quite expensive (much more so than the category below).
2) are much newer generation tyres which will benefit from a decade or two of tyre development.
You’ll get a range of opinions on here about which is best. Personally I prefer (2), as the newer generations of tyre have advances in dry and wet grip, handling, ride and rolling resistance far in excess of any advantage the N rated tyres had over their non-N rated versions two decades ago. Yes the N rated tyres get updated, but not at the same rate.
So of the new options available for the 996 in a 17, what are your best options?
Continental make great tyres. Their latest Premium Contact 7 and Sport Contact 7 are class leading by quite a long way. However it’s tricky to get a good match for the 17” sizes for all 4 corners.
Which leaves you with:
Michelin Pilot Sport 5
Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymetric 6
You won’t go wrong with either. Both superb performers in all conditions. In a nutshell, the Michelins have a more pliant ride and will probably last longer, but the Goodyears have sharper handling, better outright grip and are still excellent for ride quality and longevity.
Personally I went for the Goodyears.
Note that you need to get a bit clever with tyre sizes - I’ve gone for 245/45/17 on the back. Given up a bit of width but still grips unbelievably in the dry, and better in the wet.
Depending on which you go for, you might also need to go for a 225 on the front rather than a 205.
For more in depth reading on these options, the tyre reviews website (and YouTube) is excellent. There’s a great video comparing these two options, can dig it out if you can’t find it.

Look for a 4 digit code, inside a rounded rectangle. First two digits are the week (0-52), and second two digits are the year.
Lots of cars out there running round on very old tyres! On a sports car you really want new ones every 6 years (again, opinions vary…)
Their 'date of birth' is written on the tyre sidewall. Look out for a four-digit code.
The first two figures represent the calendar week in which it was made (from 1 to 52) and the second two figures are the year of manufacture
. So a code of 1320 would mean your tyre was made in the 13th week of April 2020.
I ran Falken 453's on a corvette on 17" rims and they suited the car superbly but had large sidewalls. I've just purchased 4 pilot sport 5's for the 996 and highly recommend.
Falkens are great tyres. I've run on them on my 996 for nearly a decade without any issues and I drive like a t**t at times.
There are better tyres out there, as stated, but how deep are your pockets? Value for money wise, you won't get a better tyre IMHO.
