RUF Kompressor Conversion for all 996 and 997 Carrera
<p class="main">A RUF performance upgrade for <u>all</u> naturally-aspirated Porsche 996 and 997 Carrera
<p class="main">
Many of these naturally-aspirated owners would like to have additional horsepower for their Porsches. RUF provides the integrated solution! RUF‘s Kompressor Conversion, with maximum boost of 0.6 bar, provides noticeable improvement in torque that translates into improved acceleration and top speed. The power curve is increased throughout the RPM range.
<p class="main">
The Kompressor Conversion is based on a centrifugal compressor, mechanically driven by a Poly-Rip belt, and is a fully integrated system:
<ul class="main">
[*]The engine compression ratio is lowered
[*]Special Ruf-designed Fuel Injectors are installed
[*]Special Ruf-programmed electronic engine management system is harnessed
[*]Ruf water-cooled intercoolers are incorporated into new intake manifolds which are fed by a dedicated cooling system via separate front radiator that utilizes an electric coolant circulation pump
[*]The system is further complimented with new catalytic converters specifically tuned to enhance the Kompressor's torque curve

Sounds good until the engine needs replacement at 50K miles.
I read that as 'bring us an engine to be modified that has more than 50,000 miles and we suggest it be replaced prior to the blower installation, otherwise we can give you a nifty 2 year warranty.'
That makes a lot more sense! Thanks!
When I visited RUF a couple of months ago I was told that they had a couple of customer Caymans already lined up for this modification (I was happy to volunteer mine as a test mule). I don't know know if any have been completed yet as no one here has said that they are doing this modification. The installed price I was quoted was closer to $27-28K so maybe they've lowered their price a bit.
I frankly don't see a lot of potential at those prices. 80 HP for 35% of the base price of the car is 'terrible' cost-benefit.
If I wanted a 3.8L engine for a total price of $95K....I would have bought the 997S for $88K and saved myself the $7K...???
Maybe others will gladly throw money at this upgrade, who knows...
Paul
If I had the extra cash I would have built a Cayman like Mission's 85K car.
Russ
hello!
Why not just replace the existing engine with the 997 GT3 3.6 engine?
Edited by - rocket on 04/12/2006 5:10:47 PM
to rich for my blood.....id rather buy one of those really fast go karts that go about 70mph. that would be more of an adrenalin rush than the extra hp in my already peppy cayman.....
