I saw this thread over at ********: It's a new stainless steel exhaust for the
Cayman S
. They claim a 19.6 Horse Power gain.

Fabspeed exhaust doesn't fit right, ask one of our members here who tried it, the Fabspeed
Boxster
exhaust is not an even swap with the
Cayman S
. Also any dyno runs to back that up? I highly doubt a cat back exhaust is going to show that much improvement, even with some lower cell cats.
I had a feeling it might be garbage. Thought I'd post it anyhow.

Also that's not a
Cayman
in the image, that's a
Boxster
, the exhaust hangs way too low, even on a
Boxster
, and does not produce the horsepower they claim. If this was legit you'd think you'd see these guys as a sponsor here right? Never heard from them.
I started writing an article, but ... We spent quite some time trying to get it to fit and couldn't do a good job of it.The new Muffler bracket that was suppliedwas not even close to the muffler. If I slid the attachment on the mounting tube, Ihad to move it almost off the end for it to line up. The part of the bracket that contacts the back of the mufflerwas too far away as well. If I placed the muffler closer, the top outlet contacted the end of the transmission.
The other problems were...It was actually 7 pounds heavier than the original. I even weighed it twice because I couldn't believe it. There were no new gaskets or nuts to replace the old ones at the flanges. The new flangewas so thick that the nutswould not go on the whole way and the top locking part of the nut had nothing to grip. The standards say, there has to be at least one thread of the stud showing.
It is a little deceiving looking at the pictures onthe web site, because there are no brackets installed in those pictures, including the ugly strap in the middle of the muffler. The muffler seems to hang down a lot lower than the original and looks a little 'tacked on' with the original tip coming from a different angle, more from the bottom.
We had to re-use the crossover pipe. Even completely clamped, it slid over the pipes on the new mufflers easily. We would have had to expand those for it to fit properly.
I have to say that it was beautifully polished. I did check the inside with a magnet and it appears NOT to be stainless. I do not know if others are stainless all the way through. I don't think the original one is.
They did take it back with minimal resistance and it only cost me shipping and a couple of days of frustration.
I have since received an email from them informing me that they have 'solved' some of the issues and invited me to drive over (200mi) to have it 'Professionally' installed. I declined. I don't think there is a solution for the thicker flanges. They seemed to avoid that subject.
I'm waiting on another company to come out with something that would work better. Perhaps Milltek will be the one. Looking forward to trying it out.

See this is why this site ROCKS! It's you guys sharing your experiences, good and bad, that makes us all smarter!
Thanks for that update David.

There is the Miltek coming out and Tubi style has one for the
Cayman
out now as well. Tubi is usually quite expensive but I don't know what the cost isThey are Italian and make great exhausts for Lambos, Ferraris, BMW's and Porches. I've heard a 996 TT with a Tubi and it sounded great.
My experiences with aftermarket exhausts is that it is totally subjective with respects to the sound produced.
My 2 cents for what it's worth.
K-Man S,
Yes, you're right! This is a perfect example of why this site rocks. I'm glad I can be a part of it.
We have you to thank. Thank you.
Shane
David,
Maybe they can use your car for advertising. You know, you drive 200 miles; they professionally install the exhaust for free to your satisfaction; and you pay them solely by posting your 'very happy indeed' comments on this site.
If they address all of your concerns AND provide you with a product for helping with their R&D, then they should get amply rewarded by purchases from other attentive
Cayman
owners!!!

fmarshall,
I agree with you and in the end they were implying that they would install it for free, however my confidence was pretty low at that point and there were no solutions to the nuts that were only on half way or the fact that the exhaust was heavier and there were no dyno results.Otherwise I may have considered it, even though It would take a day and lots of miles.
I did inform them from the beginning, that I was intending to write an article. I think if their approach was, thatI was going to 'help' with R&D I would view it differently than having been told repeatedly that it has been tested and installed on a number of
Caymans
.
I hope they do have the problems solved and hope to hear from someone else that it works great.
