Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I had prophetically replaced the water pump and AOS.
Leading evidence: 'Replace prophetically' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean between the a/c condenser and the rad behind' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. Mine kept having check engine light / back to the dealer many times until they finally admitted the valve wear let oil pass into the filter giving the light......factory agreed to replace liners at around $10,000 their cost.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello everyone,,
I’m looking into a Porsche 911 996 Carrera as a 4th fun car, the one i’m looking at is a 3.4i 300hp with 93.000 Miles on the clock.
The price is very reasonable comparing to other adverts, it has a violet body color and the 4S wheels. Great spec! Exterior aswell as interior are in great condition.

People may not find the 996 the most attractive 911’s but i love the youngtimer look and they’re aging very well in my opinion.
Now i was wondering, are these cars reliable? Great drives? Would you recommend with this mileage?
Its built 03/‘98 so one of the first i assume. It’s meant to drive at least 200 miles a month so a 944 or 914 is not an option imo.
Thanks in advance!
Make sure you educate yourself regarding the potential problems with the intermediate shaft bearing in the motor. The repair involves removing the transmission/clutch assembly. If it's been done, you're good to go. If not, the car should be priced accordingly.
I have had my 99 C2 since 2012, I had the ims done when I bought the car along with the clutch. The only failure I've experienced is the cracking of the coolant reservoir. I had prophetically replaced the water pump and AOS. Other than that any other repairs were planned upgrades and not necessarily needed.
Reliability is only as good as the maintenance the car has had. You have to know about the IMS and if it was replaced. The other huge issue with these cars is cooling. They do not tolerate overheating and can easily crack a cylinder head leading to a coolant oil intermix, which is fatal to the engine. If you don't have records for the car's maintenance, it's a gamble without a VERY thorough PPI. It's 20 years old! Replacing coolant lines alone can run you well over $1k. There are a lot of them!! The debris behind the front rads need to be cleaned out if they have not been yet. The nose has to come off and you need to clean between the A/C condenser and the rad behind. You would not believe how sand and leaves collect in there, reducing cooling capacity. So, yeah, with good maintenance you'll have a fun reliable car. Poor maintenance is a ticking time bomb for any of the early water-cooled 986/996's.
Agree on all comments .....996 is as reliable as any 911 ...
They all have their unique aspects/problems .
My 993 and many others were noted for ,any ending issues much more costly than IMS and related items needed.
Mine kept having check engine light / back to the dealer many times until they finally admitted the valve wear let oil pass into the filter giving the light......factory agreed to replace liners at around $10,000 their cost. My 993 was not unique for this issue.
The SC’s head studs would pull ...etc.etc.
BTW think the 2nd generation headlight detail and the C4S rear are in my opinion a masterpiece of body lines and flow.
At the prices for all variants of 996 they are an absolute steal.
So...just saying
drove mine for 9 yrs 176K miles.. Never broke down and never any issues.. Super east to fix and parts were very inexpensive too.. Cold AC warm Heat good stereo .. I miss my 996
