Well after redrocket posted the note about Eibach looking for cars to test spring kits on i sent Eibach an email saying that i might be interested, but had PASM. They called me today and asked if could bring my car over for a day or 2 so they could test their spring kit designed for the non-PASM car on mine. All of a sudden i wasn't so sure that i wanted anyone tearing my baby apart, especially since i have been very happy with the overall handling/ride quality.
Anyway what would you guys do? I guessicould just leave the stock springs on anyway and sell the set from Eibach.
Skip it, I doubt Eibach can improve your lap times with their springs because the car is already superb. I usually try to avoid taking anything apart for entertainment because it seems like your just asking for something to sqeak or rattle in the future.
For me I'd pass. Getting something for free that you don't want isn't worth the worry.
So if I understand you correctly they want to try some non-PASM springs on your PASM car? What sort of tests do they intend to run? Are they going to develop springs for a PASM car based on the testing results? Will you get a free set of PASM springs if they develop them? Certainly you don't want non-PASM springs on your PASM car. I am wondering if they will list for you what sort of tests they are going to run? Rebound and return rates? Ride quality? I mean physically the non-PASM springs will work, they fit, and they can drive the car with them on, but that doesn't mean they will be ideal, in fact they won't be otherwise Porsche would use the same springs for PASM and non-PASM and they don't.
So I'd want to know about the testing they intend to run, and whether or not you get PASM springs if they decide to make them. IF they don't decide to make them, or just decide to re-purpose their non-PASM springs for PASM cars and hide that ugly little fact, what do you get???
I tend to agree with you guys. It would bedifferent if Eibach said that they had been working on springs to work with PASM and would like to test them on a few cars. They said that if the non-PASM springs don't work well (not sure what their definition of well is)theywere going to develope springs specific forPASM and i would get those, or i could get a kit for any other car i wanted.
I only talked to the rep briefly and basically said i'd think about it and would call back for more details. Maybe if i had time to actually stay there with the car and they were going to test springs specific for PASM i would do it, but otherwise i don't think so.
Anyway i'm sure there is someone on this board who want's freesprings for a non-PASM car. If you're in the LA/Orange County area contact Eibach.
Ask them if they'd like to be a sponsor here and allow us to document their testing procedures and their development of PASM compatible springs. They would stand to gain a lot by doing so and of course lose a lot by turning down the offer. If they are interested I'm happy to talk to them about sponsorship and documenting their development although I'd need someone like you local to them to do that.
I'm going to be at Eibach's facility this Saturday for a tour and tech session, so i will talk to them then.
I talked to a few of the guys at Eibach today and overall they were very knowledgeable and professional. The facility is pretty impressive and is used for R&D as well as manufacturing.
They only want to put the non-PASM springs on a PASM car to check for proper fitment and ride height. They are not going to offer the non-PASM springs for the PASM car. Based on the fit/function of the non-PASM springs as well as specs they get off of the stock PASM springs (plus I'm sure a lot of other factors)they will design springs specific for the PASM equipped car. They will be happy to share their results with us as well as specs on the springs they develop. I would be allowed to hang out and document/photograph the process (except for anything confidential).
Overall this is starting to sound like a pretty cool experience, but I'm still on the fence a bit since i am really happy with the car as is. If there is anyone out there who is really interested in thisIsuggest you do it. If no one voluntaries within the next week i guess I'll probably do it.
Do I have to be local to volunteer?
