Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Thanks for the guru info Richard - all seemed back to normal yesterday, but I'll keep an ear cocked and pop down the OPC in due course; the failed ballast resistor sounds plausible - they just sounded like they were running flat out under relatively mild conditions.

The front cooling fans (behind the bumper) fired up quite intrusively yesterday - running really quite noisily, enough to catch my attention.....

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The front cooling fans (behind the bumper) fired up quite intrusively yesterday - running really quite noisily, enough to catch my attention..... It was a mild day and I had been in traffic, but the temp gauge was sitting merrily at 80+ as normal - I wouldn't have thought the engine compartment was abnormally hot either... No coolant light level issues or any other clues of hot running. Just wondering why the fans seemed to be running hard - or has a fan(s) gone noisy I wonder - bearing perhaps? All thoughts/horrible experience appreacited

POST 2Original post

The fans are two-speed, the low speed being controlled by a ballast resistor which can fail. If you can get it plugged in to a Porsche tester, the low and high speed fans can be actuated manually, which would show if the resistors are working. This shows the switch-on conditions: https://www.porscheclubgb.com/forum/tm.aspx?m=330170#330170
