Suggestion

I had this in a car I test drove prior to purchase, I discussed it with the chap who did the PPI, he suggested new tyres and a full alignment were required, the dealer had this done, result, problem went away and I bought the car.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

15 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

For a while I have experienced a random brake judder when I apply the brakes as I am going over a pothole or a very rough bit of road. The sensation comes right through the pedal, which judders, and it feels like it is a really really rough grinding/scraping sensation. No warning lights come on. It only happens if I apply brakes while going over something very rough/uneven. I am replacing pads & discs soon, as both need renewing, but this has been going on for the past 8k miles/18mths, ever since I got the car. Anyone got any ideas? Migration info. POST 2Original post

does it feel like its skipping underneath you? Could be dampers not keeping in 100% contact with the road? or just uneven surfaces causing it to skip slightly? Migration info. Legacy thread was 136579

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Dont think so - the juddering comes through the brake pedal. There is a little bit of steering wheel wobble/movement, but nothing major. I dont get either effect if I am not applying the brakes. Migration info. Legacy thread was 136581

POST 4Original post

Sounds like the abs triggering as a wheel skips over a bump. My C4S does it occasionally when braking hard (esp at lower speeds) over potholes etc. Migration info. Legacy thread was 136584

POST 5Original post

I'd agree with Rob, sounds very much like the ABS kicking in as you brake over bumpy roads and the tyres lose traction. If the suspension/shock is not perfect, this is more likely to happen as you don't get max grip from the tyres. Migration info. Legacy thread was 136588

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks guys - ABS light doesnt flicker, but sounds very plausible. Do I need to get this looked at, or do you think its normal/just something to live with? Migration info. Legacy thread was 136595

POST 7Original post

You wont get an ABS trigger light, only PSM if you have it. I've experienced it in a number of different cars- just a consequence of firm suspension and poxy road surfaces. I suppose you could have the dampers checked out if you really wanted to be sure, but it sounds normal to me. Migration info. Legacy thread was 136598

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks guys, very helpful to know its normal. Migration info. Legacy thread was 136602

POST 9Original post

Just to add, i get this when braking hard over uneven surfaces too, in both my C4S and golf, have always assumed it to be ABS. Migration info. Legacy thread was 136605

POST 10Original post

Definitely ABS kicking in I get it quite a bit, also on manhole covers. With all the weight at the back it's very easy to trip the front ABS. There's supposed to be a braking technique in which you load the front of the car with slight braking before heavier braking, than can help counter the ABS going off so easily Migration info. POST 11Original post

In my experience of 2 996`s the ABS is very willing to cut in, more than other performance cars. I put this down to the rear-biased weight distribution although I wonder why under heavy braking with a large amount of transfer to the front? Anyway its off-putting during spirited driving but i guess characterfull. Migration info. Legacy thread was 136643

POST 12Original post

It's because you still don't get the weight transferred fast enough, you need to do an intial weight transfer before you get into heavy braking, or so i was told by the experts. And confirmed in the following quote "Make an light initial application of the brakes for a few tenths of a second, that loads up the nose. Then firmly apply brakes. it is effectively two stages of braking. Do not bleed of of the brakes after the initial application, keep the pressure on ready for the main application. That will prevent the abs from cutting in early as the front is loaded befroe heavy braking commences." Steve Rance Migration info. Legacy thread was 136648

POST 15Original post

Been said already...but this is almost certainly ABS doing its job. Point to note is that worn dampers, worn tyres or too much air in the tyres will cause the ABS to kick in more easily over rougher roads. Migration info. Legacy thread was 136892
