Good evening,
First post, virtual beers on me !
2007
987.1
2.7 Manual.
Strange whirring pulse type noise behind my left side when driving, RHD. Occurs under load between 1800 & 2100 rpm. Then disappears.
Can't hear it if the car is stationary at the same engine speed. Car stops & goes like a dream.
No mention of wheel bearings at the MOT 2 weeks ago.
Drive shaft ? Gearbox ?
Many years ago I experienced a loud "whirring noise", off and on, that got progressively louder over a few days. Turned out to be my water pump failing. By the time I got to the mechanic, it sounded like a jet engine powering up, lol. A pump replacement solved the issue. I'd check there first. Good luck and keep us posted.
Thanks for the advice.
The noise is not getting louder. The car has had a new water pump at 75k. Mileage now 110k.
Noisy rollers or tensioner bearing or the serpentine belt itself? Were the wheel bearings specifically checked? How many miles on your car?
Wheel bearings fine at MOT test 2 weeks ago. I swopped the wheels over, noise stayed the same side. Does the serpentine belt run at a constant speed ?
Serpentine belt is parasitic drag, it's not static speed it's variable, just the clutches in the AC compressor alone would vary the speed. It's just a WAG anyway. How many kilometers / miles are on the car? Pulsing noise is difficult for me to interpret. If the car runs nice, which you mentioned it did, it runs at the proper temperature and maintains oil level within
Porsche
guidelines then run it; enjoy it.
101k miles on the car.
It’s the first
Porsche
& mid engined car I’ve owned. This may be just a characteristic of this flat 6 engine ?
Injectors can make pulsing noises, valves can be a little noisy especially at that mileage, just enjoy it.

Have taken this further. After a gearbox oil change the noise is less apparent but still there.
My mechanic has sourced a replacement gearbox from a lower mileage car.
While doing the clutch & RMS at the same time, the flywheel was found to have loads of play,
So it's a new flywheel too.
I hope this is it !
It was the gearbox.
The noise changed slightly after changing the gearbox oil.
Replacement box sourced from a lower mileage car.
Flywheel was found to have excessive play so that was replaced too along with the clutch.
Noise gone.
Thanks for getting back to us with the "cure" - it adds to the hive-knowledge since that's one I haven't heard of before..
