Hey, on my 2006 987
Boxster S
(
Bose
, heated seats) both the trunk and the frunk have little lights that are supposed to go on when you open the things.
Anybody have an idea why both of them would not be working? Is it just a coincidence? Bulbs seem good (1.8 ohms, no volts). Parts lists call those "Linolite" which seems like a much more futuristic name than "long skinny bulb designed last century". I tried key in/out/accessory, messing with the interior light (at the mirror) settings, and can't find these lamps listed in the fuse list (attached) although I went through most/all the fuses checking for dead ones.
My fusebox map is not from my fusebox lid as that is "of course" missing and I downloaded it from somewhere. (Haven't found where they're kept, here on P9. Could really use electrical schematics too ;-) Aside: What does "CU" stand for in these lists? It shows up a lot.) As I'm writing this, I realized I haven't gone through and checked for outright missing fuses, so that's something I'll have to check.
Ideas? Suggestions? I'd rather not rip
everything
apart and start following wires...! Though I have a sneaking suspicion a previous idiot may have disconnected them
on purpose
after their battery died for the third time, something like that. Hope not but this is also the person who told me they had the low coolant sensor disconnected (which I haven't found yet, either, though I think I know where to look)... 🤷♂️
Thanks!
I believe the CU means control unit, so providing power to that module.
The best source of authoritative info on the 987 series is AllDataDIY - you sign up for a subscription and you'll find the wiring diagrams, plus enhanced diagrams that will highlight a circuit from one end to the other (meaning in some cases across pages of diagrams) - making it way easier to figure out what controls what. It also provides mechanical procedures for repairs, with torque settings, etc. There is almost always a discount on the subscription. I believe I posted about one a month or so ago.. offhand I don't remember what it was - but it made the price almost reasonable. Considering what you're talking about doing on your car - it might be a worthwhile investment.
Welcome to P9,

1) If you haven't already, measure voltages with a voltmeter. That will get you in the ballpark as to figure out what's going on there.
2) In order to get those two lights rolling on my 987.2, I did a bunch of wiring troubleshooting by using a PIWIS2. That's kind of the definitive way to test switches and all sorts of stuff. Do a search online here -- plenty of info about that. Great investment for your car.
3) Plus, if I remember correctly, I think I ultimately straightened the rear bulb being out by running a "handoff procedure" using the PIWIS. The fact that the bulbs were fine drove me crazy, let alone that voltage could be supplied to those lights during testing.
Good luck with your troubleshooting!
So that's where we're at. I thought 2006 was too old and not every little thing was driven by canbus yet, but I guess here we're at the stage where it's all software driven, but still coming from central boxes with lot of wires. Okay then.
I did a bunch of searching about PIWIS. Previously I'd seen a page saying it's this $10,000 thing dealers have. Now I found some awesome mega-threads with people installing Windows XP VMs on their laptops
Good stuff. This I can understand. Haven't figured out yet which OBD2 interface is the "best" or how much it matters (there's a $500 Autonumen one that claims to have a superior circuit board; on the other extreme, I already have a couple of the cheapo ebay bluetooth ones, actually one in each of our cars, that talk to a rudimentary iOS app called OBD Fusion).
Thanks for pushing me to get the OBD thing going -- just goes to show you, these days, sooner or later
everything
becomes a computer project!
Yup - If you go with the whole
WinXP
image thing, I bet you may make some progress with this. No guarantees, but it has helped me out in many, many ways. Cheering you on and enjoy the threads.
