Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.
Discussions that suspect a cause
1
0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Suspected cause
Likely the shop will send it to Erik Johnson -so you may as well contact him direct or one of the very few G96 rebuilders.
0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Suggestion
You need to check the car for a water pump leak and check the belt for signs of rubbing -- one or both edges will be sharp -- and then check the accessory drives for any excessive play.
Leading evidence: 'shop will send it' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'shop will send it' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check accessory drives' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My '99 C2 with 82k miles has developed an intermittent whine and I think it is coming from the tranny. I did a bit of searching and it seems like this is common in 996s. The whine does not change with acceleration and does not change whether the clutch is depressed or not. I suppose it could be a pulley bearing but it sounds way louder inside the car. Has anyone experienced this recently? I am wondering how big of a repair bill this will be. This would be the first time the car would be in a shop since I bought it over 2 years ago.
If it ends up being a tranny bearing, you can have your box rebuilt for about $4000 and end up with a much better tranny than what came out of the factory. I believe a few places rebuild them, I've heard gbox talked about the most.
Yes, there is a rebuild thread for the 6 speed. But what we really need is a rebuild thread with a commentary by a knowledgeable person. The parts are very expensive. The tools are expensive(Huge puller required). The chance of damage with such a powerful tool is significant. It is very tricky getting the case back together. It can be done but the write-ups were by one-timers ,so I am nervous about following their path exactly. It is a very expensive gearbox to screw up. There is way less info on the gearbox than the engine even !
The pdf link for the rebuild was taken down unfortunately. It was at "itguysnetwork". They are a.k.a. 3_Angels in the link below. You could try contacting them to get the pdf restored?

Probably not a transmission whine, then.
I think your suspicion the noise could be from a pulley (accessory drive) bearing or maybe even an idler/tensioner roller bearing is worth considering.

In Atlanta? Take the gearbox to Goldcrest Motorsports. There is zero reason to ship this gearbox. The reason Gbox is so well known for this is he was one of the first to buy a 50 tin press and a huge pile of core gearboxes to harvest spares from before Porsche would sell you service parts. That was almost a decade now. He made a niche for himself.
But these days any good shop with a good gearbox mechanic can do one for you. The press thing and the case thing are both a little tricky and I personally have no interest in ever rebuilding one. If you do want to ship it, send it to California Motorsports in AZ. Roger Brown will treat you right.
