All,
I've read some threads about hot start issues, but none quite like the issues I'm having.
1) Everytime, immediately after I fuel up, the engine just cranks and won't fire. The only way to get the car started is to floor the gas pedal (throttle wide open) and wait for it to start sputtering up. After a couple revs I can let off the throttle but I'll have a rough idle. After about 60 seconds the idle returns to smooth and everything feels and acts normal.
2) At times, the same problem occurs when I try to refire after a hot start (car has been driven awhile, stop, shut it off, run in a store for a couple minutes, come back out, just cranks). Again, the only way to get the car started is to floor the gas pedal (throttle wide open) and wait for it to start sputtering up. After a couple revs I can let off the throttle but I'll have a rough idle. After about 60 seconds the idle returns to smooth and everything feels and acts normal.
Help please!
I assume you've seen this recent thread?

Pete,
Yea I saw that thread. I'm going to try a few of those things, but I really thought mine desreved its own thread because the hot start issue is random most of the time, but everytime I've opened the gas lid and fill up, I have this problem.
Just a follow up - I fixed the problem. The problem was a stuck (open) gas tank vent valve (a part of the EVAP system). I purchased the part from Auto Atlanta and installed it myself. Part number is: 98711012801
Auto Atlanta - Porsche Parts and Accessories
How did you find it? Diagnosed by a shop or yourself?
It certainly would have been the first place I would have looked given you specifically mentioned after filling up every time it is a problem and only occasionally teh rest of teh time after a stop and restart. Glad you got it fixed and hope it was easy.
Wow. Trying to remember here. I can't believe that part is $500 now. I think I paid $75 for it! Anyway, easy to install (as I can remember). Here's the quick fix: don't shut your car off while you're refueling. I know they say that's a no-no but your with your engine running, it'll burn the excess fumes from the stuck open valve.
interesting, i found this one:

granted it's a 996 part number, but it's more than half the price of the part number you mentioned, they look the same to me and the link above says it fits 'ALL' Porsche, hmmmm
Thanks for the tips here. I had the same problem with my 987
Cayman
yesterday, could not start after fuelling up. Did some research and came across this forum and tried a few hours later. So I kept my foot on the brake pedal, floored the accelerator pedal, cranked and it started immediately without any spluttering.
My
987.1
CS just started doing this as of my last 2 fuelings. I dont overfill. Today I only filled to 3/4 of a tank. No start up. I did the gas pedal to the floor and it cranked, sputtered a little and smoothed out in 30 secconds or so.
Question; have you replaced any parts since for this issue (ie. fuel vent line)?
