Suspected cause · Original poster
The drain hose on the master cylinder side near the batter compartment is missing and I suspect water infiltration did it in.
Leading evidence: 'water infiltration did it in' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'water infiltration did it in' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Disconnect brake fluid hoses' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I took it to my local indie shop and the mechanic was able to install it without disconnecting the brake fluid hoses.

Good luck on the repair, hope it works to solve the problem.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

It looks as if I may have a faulty brake booster in my MY99 996 C2. The drain hose on the master cylinder side near the batter compartment is missing and I suspect water infiltration did it in. Symptoms are a failure to fully return the brake pedal to its complete upright position. If I push firmly on it, it does, if I depress it lightly, it does not. My indie will diagnose definitively on Monday.
If it is the booster, on the Pelican parts site there is a huge differential in price between the Porsche booster and a TRW version of the booster. In this case, I am leaning towards the TRW as it is not engine related. What to you all think?
Thanks,
Bob
When you are driving along at 70 mph and need to slam on the brakes, do you want the first thought to go through your mind as "glad I forked over for the best" or "geeeee...maybe I should have not done this on the cheap?" Good brakes....there is no substitute. No experience with TRW, but my default is always OE for critical parts. Just saying.....
TRW is a large company that focuses on braking, steering, and stability systems. They supply parts and solutions to most of the major automotive companies including Porsche. I wouldn't be surprised at all if TRW supplied the original brake booster for the 996. Personally I would go with TRW if the price was better.
Yeah, ignore what I said. I looked up the two options and the TRW brake booster would be good. Good luck on the repair, hope it works to solve the problem.
It was indeed the brake booster. I found one preowned, an OEM Lucas brake booster for the 996. I took it to my local indie shop and the mechanic was able to install it without disconnecting the brake fluid hoses. So there was no need to bleed the brakes at all. I now have the best braking performance since I've owned the car. It's absolutely perfect now. And, the whole process was under $200.
Thanks for all of your help! There's just so much great information and support in this forum.
Best,
Bob
