The 991.1 GT3 really needs to have its finger followers refreshed every 40,000 miles and its camshafts checked for any related wear.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm looking at both. The look and numbers seem very similar between the two except the .2 is 30k (more or less) dearer. I get it has a little more power and I guess generally the power curve is better, but the interiors look very similar and they're both monsters. My feelings are that the 991.2 would be worth a little extra spend, but can't really rationalise it. This, for example, to my mind is a beauty: https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202503069... But then this one (helpfully linked to last week, thanks) with the buckets feels like a wonderful place to be. Does the 992 turbo have a load more emissions nonsense like the 992 GT3 has compared to the 991? https://911virgin.com/listings/991-2-turbo-s-coupe... Would appreciate people's opinions of either turbo s varieties please.

POST 2Original post

You'll have to excuse the level of geek I am on all the turbo models. 997.2 turbo and 991.1 turbo have Alusil cylinders and therefore bore scoring is a slight possibility now these cars are getting older and I know of a few engine replacements but these cars were remapped a bit too aggresively for stock engines IMO. I do not know why anyone needs to tune these turbos they are so rapid out of the box almost like electric cars mid range. 991.2 turbo onwards gets newer tech SUMEbore cylinders https://www.sae.org/publications/tec...ure%20ceram... to help against bore scoring. Lots of other changes too for example both turbochargers are bigger with exotic lw alloy materials and upgraded PDK clutch materials which are too numerous to mention from 991.1 turbo to 991.2 turbo. The fuel system in the gen 2 far more capable too but this only makes a real difference if you plan to tune otherwise completely irrelvant. In terrms of driving nothing in between the two cars for me if anything the gen 1 991 turbo s a bit sweeter to drive with its smaller turbos and less laggy. On my favourite b road I don't think I've driven a more unhinged car in terms of cross country pace than a stock gen 1 991 turbo s. I really like the blue one in your link looks very classy in that colour. 992 turbo s has an all new 3.7 forged engine with even better internal components than the 991.2 turbo s and was developed by same engineer who was responsible for 918. As the last pre hybrid turbo s he wanted to give the turbo s a proper send off and make it something v.special so no expense spared through its development. It does have PPF on exhaust but easily fixed with a good after market sports exhaust. Whilst i dont like the interior on the 992 I think its the nicest looking turbo. Out of the 3 I'd buy the one 911 Virgin have because I like those carbon seats. They're heated in the 991 too which is useful for cold mornings in the UK. Still for £30k less hard to walk by that blue one it looks amazing in that colour. Not important but the gen 2 like at 911V gets Apple Car Play as standard.

POST 3Original post

Also just check the carbon ceramics in good condition before buying one of these. They're very expensive to replace.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Forgive the geekiness?? Are you nuts this is exactly the information I was hoping for. Thanks! Must say all things considered and that this will be a forever car, the 30k will be forgotten one day but the fact I'm driving better bores and all the other stuff you said is good. I found exactly the same thing by the way between the 996 X50 / turbo s and my ordinary one. The extra lag made me prefer the "normal" one. In the GT2 it worked for a new improvement due to all the other loveliness done to create the GT2

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

By the way I've booked to look at the 911v car Wednesday. I'm leaning towards the turbo over the GT3 just now purely for the monster midrange. But I'm concerned that much as I enjoyed my 996 turbo, I needed for more mental and fairly quickly got bored with it. The GT2 delivered perfection IMO. I think it's possible the turbo s might be just too excellent and flawless and the GT3 too revvy and flat in the midrange.

POST 6Original post

You need to drive the 991.2 GT3 too especially as this may be a forever car.

POST 7Original post

Looking at 911v website I'd be strolling in to buy the turbo s and walking out with the purple del miles GT3 RS! Now thats a special 911.

IMI A said: Looking at 911v website I'd be strolling in to buy the turbo s and walking out with the purple del miles GT3 RS! Now thats a special 911. Yes it's a beauty. But my budget started at a sub-60k for a gorgeous brown 991.1 turbo s which the seller messed me around over so I didn't get a chance to buy it, up to 135k GT3 or GT4RS. That's already a fair old scope creep! I think that 156k GT3RS would be rather out of range. Plus with those miles I'd never be able to drive it. I think 15/25k miles so as to not pay a silly low miles premium and yet also buy something that still feels fresh.

POST 10Original post

I have a 991.1 turbo S. Immensely capable car. Which really is way too anodyne a way to describe what it can do. I did a mini review on 911uk.com. Owners Gallery forum; on the first page. I have real difficulty understanding how - even though it’s now a 12+ year old design - it can have been made appreciably more accomplished.

POST 11Original post

RS badge is very special. I think the price on the purple RS maybe needs to be adjusted towards the top end of your range. Having said that I think when you see that turbo s you'll be smitten. The yellow dials and yellow seat belts can be changed if you do not like them for buttons I agree with other poster they're too bright for me. Henry has done good youtube videos on 991 RS, GT3 and turbo s on their youtube channel worth a watch. Gen 1 RS prices seem to be all over the place at the mo probably due to most buyers wanting the 991.2 GT3 with all new engine. https://www.pistonheads.com/buy/listing/18850643 https://www.pistonheads.com/buy/listing/17189535 https://www.pistonheads.com/buy/listing/18653583

Get the .2 Turbo S. You won’t regret it. All the power and torque you will ever need plus it can be easily upgraded at Litchfield if it really isn’t enough. No bings and bongs or systems to be disabled when you get in other than auto start. Great colour scheme on the one at 911v with buckets and a pop of yellow. But then I am biased……..

POST 14Original post

I have a 991.1 Turbo S. I love it - the best Porsche is the one you use everyday they say. I would have preferred a .2 just for the rear lights and less so the Apple car play. However is another 20-30k which seems a bit silly really so went with the .1. It far most engaging than the internet would have you believe - I think the rear wheel steer and helper springs etc all add up. A GT car will definitely be more engaging, but I use mine for everyday driving , running kids about, shopping etc. the moment the road clears I’m having a blast. I love the fact that on most drives I get to have a blast rather than having to get up early to enjoy the special car. I had a GT4 as well but sold it as it wasn t getting used outside of the weekend (replaced with a Lotus Exige 350). If you are worried about the ceramics just get the OPC to measure the depth as they have the tool for doing that. I m not a fan of the steering wheel - feels a bit big and thick for me , so I swapped with a .2 one - very easy to do - 10min job. Edited by bosshog on Monday 21st July 07:09

POST 15Original post

it's crazy to see 991 gt3 rs @ £125k - I remember when they first came out a few selling for £400k on the aftermarket during peak mania

POST 16Original post

I have always worked on the basis that I buy the best car I can afford which I appreciate can be subjective but in your case the .2 is (to me ) the better car for the reasons mentioned above in engine design and durability. The blue one above in the Porsche advert is stunning and has the only extra I wish my .2 had the Aerokit simply for the turn up at the ends of the rear spoiler- devine! The teardrop front driving lights on the .1 instantly date the car for me, I prefer the two light bars on the second gen. I was extremely lucky to find my 2017 car 2 years ago, it had been specced with loads spent on extras that I use a lot like Adaptive Cruise Control (extremely good if you expect to do long distance tours, and as a safety net emergency braking system) front Lift, Burmester (epic) ventilated and heated 18 way front seats to name a few. So maybe important extras should be in your choice? Whichever you buy, it is a simply amazing car that scores 10/10 on most measures. Picture attached from last years Provence trip

^^^ Lovely I love the chalk colour and the maritime or is it riviera turbo s coupe. The 991.2 turbo s cab is a rare 991 comparatively in the UK. Much scarcer than say a 991.2 GT3. The innovative options you could spec these with from factory were off the scale. Exclusive carbon wheels are always a talking point when the car is parked. Or maybe a set of Satin Bronze BBS F1 R to finish the turbo s off. Not for everyone but the carbon folding buckets give the turbo s a very different feel. SWMBO uses the normal turbo s OEM alloys for track with Cup 2 R. GT3 destroyer. To be honest it destroys most things on track whether straight line or circuit. Roof down

IMI A said: You'll have to excuse the level of geek I am on all the turbo models. Can I ask… does the 991.1 Turbo motor have much in common with the 991.1 GT3 motor, and if so are there any of the finger follower issues on the Turbo? I guess lower rev limit so even if they were similar, the risk would be lower.

POST 22Original post

Hi no they’re not related engines. The 991.1 GT3 really needs to have its finger followers refreshed every 40,000 miles and its camshafts checked for any related wear. Going forward when 991.1 GT3 out of warranty I think specialists will just make replacing finger followers a service item as part of the big 4 year 40,000 mile service. Easy enough to do and if this is schedule followed 991.1 GT3 engines should be reliable going forward. Maybe the interval should be 20,000 miles for GT3s that live a hard life on track.

Used to run 996 Turbos as my daily’s years ago. Very reliable until corrosion started taking a hold on the turbos, exhaust studs and associated oil pipework etc. wonder how are these newer Turbos in this regard? What price range should unmolested Gen 1 Turbo S with around 60K miles be in now please?

I also looked at that Blue Gen 1 Turbo S for quite a long time but in the end went to a Black 991.2 Turbo Non S convertible. Although it was 5k more than the Blue S, I didn t want a supercar, but a capable GT. Believe it or not, I sold my .2 GT3 CS manual last week to scale down to the Turbo. At half the price of the GT3, I couldn t justify tying so much money down on it. Coupled with the fact the GT3 is a dream car for most until they actually own one. It’s just too hyper. It was for me anyway. I understand its holy grail for others but I have now scratched the itch. P.S. the Turbo is faster in the straights, though with less drama than the GT3. IMI A said: Hi no they re not related engines. Nah don’t write stuff like that. Have you not gotten the memo that they will be worthless as soon as you can’t have a Porsche warranty on them anymore.

POST 30Original post

I remember when 964s were worthless with engines failures imminent at any moment. 991.1 GT3 may well dip but then there will be simple solutions for known issues by indies as these fantastic GTs come out of warranty and they’ll be sought after again by next generation who’ll be having EVs forced down their throats by clueless politicians and faceless regulators.

All models from 996 onwards suffer due to location of turbos. There's a couple of gen 2 turbo coupes with 65,000 miles starting at £65k in ph classifieds so maybe £55k-£60k for a gen 1 turbo s with 60k miles? Well worth an inspection at OPC and if you're worried just stick a warranty on its £3k for 3 year extended warranty which I think is a bargain.

Did you get the 911v car, OP? Noticed it's gone from their website. Stunning car.

Thanks, yes my 996TT were year round (in Scotland) cars. The salt did some serious damage for sure. I’ve not had extended warranty on a Porsche for a long time now and didn’t realise it was only about £1K a year - even on a Turbo S? That’s spectacular value considering the peace of mind it provides.

You need to have owned the car for 90 days and pay for the 111 point inspection which is around 400 quid I think.

Given the complexity of a 991 Turbo that’s Heck of a good deal - 1/3rd cost of a McLaren

I ve been idly looking at 991.2 Turbo S cabs for a while but couldn t justify shelling out c.£100k on a car, and besides most of the cars were boring black, white or grey. However we were on holiday a couple of weeks ago and got some terrible news about an 59 year old friend of ours, who has been diagnosed with an inoperable tumour and has been sent home for palliative care. The next day I was looking on autotrader and this car popped up in a colour and interior we both loved, and my wife and I had a real carpe diem moment, as in what are we saving money every month for when we should be spending it on stuff we want now. So a deal was done over the next couple of days (I traded in my 981 BGTS) and we picked it up from Porsche Solihull (excellent from start to finish btw) last Tuesday. The cars absolutely immaculate, on 27k and is an absolute weapon, and I ll be keeping this one until I m too old to get in and out of it. Edited by Mick Dastardly on Saturday 20th September 16:30

I’ve no previous history buying used from Porsche but when I bought my car last week they gave me a 3 year warranty without me asking for one.

IMI A said: You need to drive the 991.2 GT3 too especially as this may be a forever car. I'm in a 991.2 carerra T - test drove a 991.2 GT3 PDK yesterday - definitely no where near as good as a daily driver/B road car. No power low down, too manic(high speed) up top. too stiff, too skittish, and PDK is just annoying if you like to be fully in control of the experience. Test drove a 992.1 GTS4 PDK a few months back - that was actually really good. 992 Turbo - way too fast to enjoy Cayman GTS 4.0 - excellent BUT it's not a 911 and ultimately we're all shallow enough to yearn after a 911 if it's a keeper. I think a manual (probably RWD) 991.2 GTS or T (with a bit of tuning) is the sweet spot for a proper 'road car'. My T is stock and on any give and take roads - I could not deploy any more performance without probably binning it at some point. Having said that - I might get itchy fingers soon and put GTS turbos, an exhaust and a MAP on it a la Genome/Litchfield Edited by 991T on Tuesday 23 September 11:26
