Good if you guess right the first time, not so good if you replace multiple parts before finding the actual problem.

No idea what it is but try and remove the serpentine belt and run the motor.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

So I recently bought this Porsche Cayman . It’s started to make this high pitched squeal on the drivers side. I got the fan in the vent replaced however it’s still making this noise. Any suggestions of what it could be please let me know!

POST 3Original post

No idea what it is but try and remove the serpentine belt and run the motor. If the noise goes away you can check the pulleys and go from there. If it is still there it is something inside the motor.

POST 4Original post

The car only makes that noise about 3 mins after starting the car and driving at low speed it’ll last until the oils warmed up if this is any help

POST 5Original post

As Porsche states, you need to determine if the noise is belt driven or internal. Its a PITA to get to, but you would need to remove/loosen the belt and start the engine for a short time ( a minute or less) to see if the noise goes away. If it doesn't happen with the belt off, it could be a water pump in the early stages of failure. Or the belt idler bearing. Also could be the alternator . That's about all there is on the right (starboard) side. For a Cayman , to get to the access cover you need to remove the carpet covering the firewall behind the seats. First you need to remove the top plastic trim. To do that you need to remove that "handle bar". You'll need to have a variety of torx bits/sockets. To remove the serpentine belt you'll need a 1/2" breaker bar with a large socket. IIRC, on a 987.1 it is 24mm, on 987.2 it is 30mm. The purpose of the large socket and breaker bar is to force tensioner to the side to create slack in the serpentine belt. With your free hand you can slip it off one of the pulleys. Note, you don't need to fully remove the belt, just get it off one of the pulleys such that there is no tension on the crankshaft pulley. I found it easy to slip it off the AC compressor (since that's were I was working), but you could probably just slip it off any pulley.

POST 6Original post

It’s currently the garage. Awaiting diagnosis. It’s hard because the noise doesn’t kick in until 2 mins of the car being on from a cold start. Im thinking it’s more along the lines of the bearing/ altinator more than anything. Hoping it’s just the belt and quick fix

POST 7Original post

Hey cmrh! Did you find out the squeel was. My 987.2 boxster just started making same noise after i maxed 4th gear

POST 8Original post

Hi @Flat6fan987.2 - welcome to Planet-9, the Intelligent Porsche Forum! @CMRH97 hasn't been on the forum in about 9 months. Chances are he won't see your question. While your question brings the thread back to life (a rather old thread.. but nothing wrong with that) - I don't think it would be as productive as a new thread, following these guidelines: Before posting a technical question -- PLEASE READ! If you read carefully what @RSchwerer posted you'll be off to a good start diagnosing your problem. The issue with a web diagnosis is - there can be multiple causes of a squeal sort of noise on cold startup, and diagnosing them by a web question means the answers you'll get are just other people's experiences. You can follow what they did to fix it - but if that isn't your problem then it's money down the drain. Troubleshooting by parts replacement can become quite expensive. Using that technique - the fix is always the last part you replace. Good if you guess right the first time, not so good if you replace multiple parts before finding the actual problem. BTW- when you have a chance - please visit New Member Introductions and make an introductory post, and show us some photos of your car. We love to Ohhhh and Ahhhh over car photos..
