Obviously the current generation of PDK means that cars with that fitted sort out the engine speed pretty quickly anyways.

I know you say you want brand new but I really do wish I’d tested the 911 waters with something like a 997/991.

Suggestion
I’d originally ordered a S but due to Covid and parts issues I ended up with a new 2023 GTS which I love and after 10k miles I don’t find it too harsh (maybe down the 18 way seats and running the tyres at a lower pressure)

After some advise.
Currently have a Macan S, and looking to upgrade to a 911. Not interested in second hand, as want new.
I'd had a test drive of a base 992.2, and TBH it felt plenty quick enough. Have yet to try a Carrera S though.
My dilemma is. I've specced a base car to just under £124,000, and has everything I think I want spec wise.
Same spec pretty much on an S is coming out just under £140,000. So a £16,000 difference.
I keep reading that you shouldn't spec a base Carrera by very much above list. Why is that? Do they lose more money in depreciation (percentage wise) over an S?
Those that are experienced in both models. Can you really tell the difference between the 2 cars on the road. Does that 80bhp make it a better car, or makes it too fast and less fun on the road over a base Carrera?
Is spending the additional £16,000 for an S worth it?
Won't be doing track days in it.

You will notice 80 bhp. If you need it or not is another matter but I have a turbo s so not the person to ask !
There are often brand new 992.2 on the Porsche site at a decent discount and no wait.
Bear in mind all you spend on extras on not really recoverable. It may sell a bit faster but not for much more money.
You " need " sport chrono in my view. The dial to change mode is really useful. The clock on the dash has no use but comes with it. You may want different wheels but it won't go any faster.
Seats can give you things like comfort entry ( seats go back and wheel up ) which is reasonably useful.
Bose is sort of de facto ( they may include it now I don't know ) as reports on the base audio are poor and you won't find any cars with it.
Dont go overboard!
As above, a good few base Carreras around with options at a discount. Appreciate the wish for a new car but definitely worth a call round to see what deals can be done.
For what it’s worth I have a 992.1 GTS and I don’t think it would be less enjoyable with 100bhp less as it’s too quick for the road as it is. I’d happily entertain a T or a base and I’d certainly go PDK next time with the softest suspension.

Hi,
Thanks for the response. Exactly the type of response I'm after. It's that dilemma, push myself for an S, and then maybe not enjoy it as much, as 5 seconds full throttle in an S, you're travelling much faster than in a base Carrera. Will it be more fun thrashing the base Carrera. It's not exactly slow itself.
Maybe add a bit more spec onto a base Carrera to make it feel a bit more special. Cognac interior is a strong want !
I also think with nearly 500bhp, a Carrera 4S would be better over an S. I live in Cumbria, and it can rain a lot here. But then, that's another £7k on top.
I’ve just bought an early C2S 992.1. I was keeping an eye out for both the C2 and the S and it came down to a question of spec, condition and # of owners.
After a week I can say the C2S is too quick for the roads but enormous fun. I don’t regret a bit.
Various OPC’s I’ve spoken to suggest the C2S is easier to resale and retains more value but options get wiped out value-wise.
I’d have been similar to you and in an ideal world would like to spec myself and go slightly overboard. That said, mine has a very considered but not overboard spec and having spent a decent time behind the wheel, I think the previous owner got the balance just right.
I’d say testdrive the S variant and see what you think. It’s a lot of money and think you should understand categorically what the difference is.
For the record I have 18 way adaptive seats, adaptive cruise (surprisingly good), BOSE, sunroof, normal LED headlights, folding mirrors, RS Spyder wheels and a few other bits I’m struggling to remember. Feels like the right spec.

Another option is to have a device to allow you to map your carrera to >500bhp, but switch it back to standard for when you take it to the dealer. You can have several mapping options if you wish.
When choosing between the 992.1 base and s I chose the s.
The s was just notably more potent in straight line. I would add however, that I drove a base c4 and a c2s. Honestly, I just didn’t get the grin factor from the c4. I wanted to like it more, it was cheaper and I liked the idea of 4wd re the wet too.
I live in the north and the s is good in the rain, but I do make proper use of wet mode if it’s belting it down. It’s very confidence inspiring to hoon it about in wet mode.

I think you need to get in a few really and work out what it’ll take to make it feel ‘special’.
I’ll be totally honest, despite the GTS being undeniably capable I can’t think of a time I’ve laughed out loud or grinned from ear to ear in it. Hitting the point where it’s ‘fun’ is at speeds that can be inappropriate for the road. With its grey interior, Audi-like smell and materials it feels anything but special to me. It does look the nuts from the outside, though.
But even in rear wheel drive with a manual gearbox it’s too capable. It’s too fast, the gears are far too long (75ish top of second), the ride is too firm, the steering has no feel and it sounds crap unless you’re at 7000rpm or more. I’m actually amazed how they’ve managed to engineer something so fast to be so dull. It’s not particularly fun and I can imagine a ‘4’ would be even duller, at least the RWD gives it a bit of playfulness.
I think my point is that all the reviews in the world can say one thing but what works for you in your world is totally different. You need to get out and drive different variants and see different interior specs. Clearly I bought the wrong car for me and I’d sell it tomorrow if I could - you definitely want to avoid the same.
I totally agree that a Cognac / tan interior will lift it and make it feel more special but I think I’d spec it more towards a GT-like spec than B-road blaster. But then there are far superior GT cars out there…..

Yeah, need to test drive an S. Might need to go to another dealer for that, as current one only has a base Carrera in as a demo. Said they very rarely get an S in. Mainly Base or GTS.
Base too slow Sir. Try a GTS. Too fast? You need an S.
Spec wise, I'm looking at 18 way seats, Pano roof, Cognac interior, Bose, sports exhaust, 360 parking, and a few other options. Working out around £18k of options.

Thanks again for your reply.
I was initially thinking of getting a T. But, that long gearing really puts me off. Think it's 80 in second. I have a GR-Yaris, and at 80, you're getting into 4th. Plus, the Missus needs to drive it too, and where most of us get used to a new clutch bote point after the first or second gear change, she doesn't. So, PDK it is.
It's to pretty much replace the Macan, and while a 911 will never ride as well as a Macan on Air-suspension, or be a nice quite motorway mile muncher like the Macan, I've always wanted to buy a 911. And now I'm in that position.
But, yeah, spec wise, deffo GT rather than B-Road Blaster. Cognac will definitely make it feel much more special over every other 911 with Black leather and Crayon stitching.
Wab1974uk said:

I know you say you want brand new but I really do wish I’d tested the 911 waters with something like a 997/991. They’re obviously very popular cars with lots of people but I think buying brand new you need to make sure you’re one of them. I don’t think I am, hence my disappointment with the car.
Great all-rounders, possibly the best, but I’d rather have a flawed overall car that is utterly magic in one specific area - noise, steering, handling, comfort - than something that’s a 7/10 for everything. But then the warranty, reliability, resale value all adds up to make them a compelling proposition.
Anyway, we’re incredibly fortunate to be in positions where the spec of our 911s is an issue!
5 years ago I was in your shoes but as funds were not an issue was going to have a Turbo S.
Test drove several cars and decided the poverty spec was more than fast enough.
Coming up to 3 years of having it and on no occasion have I wanted more power.
I was in the same situation in May - went C2S.
I completely acknowledge and agree C2 is fast enough for the road, but psychologically I knew I'd have "buyer’s remorse" if I didn't go for C2S
Because I wanted a GT build, then GTS with SPASM and reduced sound insulation, was never an option. Fortunately.
My previous 911 was a 992.1 4S, this would be a very good car for you, taking note of where you live and your driving needs. Not many around secondhand but I would suggest you take a test drive, you won’t be disappointed
I think if looking 992.1 then an 's' makes sense but the 992.2 are hugely expensive, you can get a really well equipped base for £110k (innodrive/matrix/18 way etc) . The 'S' versions seem to be more like £145k so there is now a huge gap, basically the price of a GTS (which I also don't want due to harder ride).
Before everyone jumps in I'm sure you can find some with 15k gap but there is normally something wrong/different.
If you really want the fastest then nothing will allow you accept a base but day to day, nothing really in it. All the magazines had said the base is the sweet spot.
If I was buying new now id have to try as many variants as possible as even the slightest spec difference can change your perspective, the base will be a cracking car (the 992.1 is) but from a cost perspective I’m not sure that you’re getting your moneys worth anymore.
I’d be tempted to hunt down a discounted delivery miles 992S which can probably be had for the cost of a brand new base.
I’d originally ordered a S but due to Covid and parts issues I ended up with a new 2023 GTS which I love and after 10k miles I don’t find it too harsh (maybe down the 18 way seats and running the tyres at a lower pressure)
Try a few before committing and good luck.
Stockport have a new C2S with a cognac interior that looks lovely - I strongly suspect a deal could be done if it floats your boat
Its not on their website but is sitting by the front doors
I am afraid this won’t help the debate of base v S
But my first ever porsche was a 992.1 S and I could bored stupid as it just wasn’t an event. It was stupidly fast, good looking, not comfortable on the base seats but it was just boring.
Now in a Spyder RS.
Now I know it isn’t apples for apples but if you want your new sports car to be an event the 911 isn’t it (well it wasn’t for me)
You are spending a lot of money. Be very sure. The cost of exiting a new 992.2 no matter what it is will be horrific

If it’s not on their website, I can see it. I live in north Cumbria.
South Lakes have an S in their showroom with Cognac interior. It does look stunning.
However, the car is Black, and so are the wheels. Double no for me.

If you’re more tempted by a GT-like car, there are far, far better options out there than a 911. Like Hotrods said, a 992 really isn’t an ‘event’ in the slightest. I know there’s more to the equation than that but when you’ve got lightly-used proper ‘event’ cars like McLaren GTs, any Aston and Ferrari Romas it does make a 911 look a dull choice.
Just pressing the Start button on my previous V12 DB11 was more of an event and more thrilling than any experience I’ve had with my 911. It was crap in the corners in comparison but was far superior in every other respect - including build quality!
Obviously if you want a 911 that’s fine, they’re popular for a reason, but they’re not special in the slightest (without going for a GT).
Well thats a view point.
Driving the 911 is always an event for me, it makes me smile as much as any of my toys.
Have what you want and enjoy, you are a long time dead.
Yesterday an overtake presented itself and I was past and grinning like the village idiot I am, at no point did I think I needed more power.
There are many reasons why the 911 has enduring popularity: History, unique layout, handling characteristics, usability, residuals, range of sub models and many more. It’s not a GT, it’s not a sports car, it’s more of a Swiss Army knife.
A DB11 is another option. I do like the way they sound, so the turnkey theatre is very good. Also, they look fabulous. The boot is pretty crap for a GT though and the rear seats have no leg room, despite being physically bigger seats than a 911. In the 911 they fold down to create a useful parcel shelf. The ‘event’ in a 911 happens when you push the car, but I can say from experience that a basic carrera can leave a DB11 for dead when the roads get even remotely challenging.
There are always other options. I have an R8. It’s an event for sure, but the boot is pitiful and the steering isn’t a patch on a 911, despite being hydraulic rather than EPS.
The OP wonders whether he needs a carrera or an S. For a road car I think that the standard carrera is all you would ever need. There is really no argument about that. If you wish to do the odd track day then an S has better brakes and an LSD.

Thanks again Crumpet,
However, the 911 is the car I'm interested in. Aston, Ferrari, McLaren? All nice cars, but also higher maintenance and running costs. And dare I say, less reliable. Plus, less dealers to take it too should (probably) something go wrong.
Then there's the whole parking it thing. A 911 blends in where maybe the other 3 stand out. Fine if you want to stand out, but I'd rather not. And then, all the other 3 would be second hand cars for the same money as the 911. Yes, I understand someone else has taken the depreciation hit, but it's still second hand and not what I'm after.
But, appreciate the comments back.

Yeah, I've had an R8 before. Damn nice cars. Mine was a V8 Manual, but I've never really warmed to the second gen R8. No doubt an amazing car, and comes with a dealer near by, and not eye watering bills every time you take it in for a service.
Thanks for your feedback. The more I read and get different opinions, the more I feel the base 911 is the car to get. Even the Sales guy (who'd probably make more commission selling me an S over base) said nothing much will get past a well driven base Carrera, and I guess he's right. You'd need a decent straight and be well into 3 figures to overtake a base 911 being driven quickly.
Think on the road, the only real benefit of an S over base, is being able to overtake quicker. No bad thing, but worth an extra £16k? Dunno.

I think you’ve nailed why people go for 911s!
My Aston was expensive to maintain and wasn’t particularly reliable. Being honest it was in a bracket beyond what my personal finances could probably keep up with if things went wrong.
One last thing from me; I was out on a favourite road of mine recently and in front was a Skoda of some kind. Hopefully it was a VRS variant but possibly it was that electric one - Enyaq or whatever it’s called - but, try as I might, I couldn’t keep up.
I honestly think anything under 5 seconds to 60 is more than enough and on UK roads you’re limited by how committed you are (read as stupid) and the only benefit of huge amounts of power is squirting from corner to corner faster - something the GTS (and, likely, the S) does well but isn’t necessarily enjoyable. I do, however, really like the massive brakes on the GTS as they inspire such confidence. I wonder if the PCCBs are available on the base model? Not only do they look more purposeful they’ll actually be useful.
So, buying again, I think I’d go base model with a snazzy interior, sports exhaust/chrono and upgraded brakes. In fact I might now go and have a look at Autotrader…..
I have had a 992.1 C2S and should be taking delivery of a 992.2 C2 late October. As you can tell I am not bothered about the extra power of the S, it's nice to know the new 992.2 base comes with the GTS turbo's and intercooler from the Turbo S (likely liberated more hp that Porsche let on), it also has the 6 pot calipers from the previous S. I went on a supercar journey after the 992.1 (which I bought during lockdown), first a LP560 then a 488GTB....now back to a 911 after a few years without a sports car. As has been said the 911 does everything so well, practical in a way the others are not, well built, not overly flashy and I have less concerns leaving it anywhere...also a bonus as its the car the wife liked more than anything else. I think there is a reason why people keep coming back to the 911.
I paid £104k for a well optioned C2S in 2020, that would be nearer £140k now....that extra cost puts me off plus I don't need the power. Like you I have also gone with the cognac interior, which I think will really lift the cabin.

Thanks for the response.
What other options have you gone for? My dealer says pan roof is essential for re-sale, as I wasn't going to tick that box. Yes, it lets more light in, but I rarely use the one in my Macan.
My main options to date are, sports Chrono, 18 way adjustable seats, Bose (can't justify Burmester) Carrera S wheels (not keen on new wheel designs for may go classic design) and Cognac interior.
Few other options. rear wipe, Porsche crest on seats etc.
I am not buying for resale, plan to keep this one a while.
Gentian Blue
Carrera S wheels
18 way seats
Bose
Surround View
Blind Spot (should be standard IMHO)
Sports Exhaust
Homelink
I’m buying to keep (I’m 62 ½) not for resale. I want it to use as a GT car, not outright sports build
GT Silver over Bordeaux / Black
Carrera classic wheels
Sports Chrono
14 way seats
HD Matrix lights
Leather package 930
Interior leather package
Heated GT steering wheel
Surround View
InnoDrive
Lane change assist (should ABSOLUTELY be standard)
Burmester
No glass roof or window tints, because in conjunction with 14-way seats, I’m aiming for a late 70’s look
Another base order here, albeit a cab.
What time scales are people seeing? According to the app mine enters ‘Signal for Production’ stage tomorrow, with a delivery estimate Mid to late October. Order was placed back in March and spec locked in June.
Oak Green / Cognac / Classic Wheels
Sports Chrono / Sports Exhaust / Bose etc and then several other ‘non essential’ options such as sport design side skirts / leather seat backs etc just to make it mine.

Pretty close to the spec I've chosen. All apart from blind spot & Homelink.
Be intereesting to see a Gentian Blue on the Carrera S wheels. Every car I've seen, the Carerra S wheel have been pained Black.

I love Oak Green, and still trying to decide between that & Gentian Blue.
Hi guys what sort of discount have you been offered on factory orders, seems to be some good discount on new stock cars best I’ve seen is 17k of a T and about 8k of an S , thinking come winter these may come down further !
Blue S stock car here if it’s any good for you?

That Leicester car is missing the sports chrono option - "essential for resale" as they say
According to dealers! I had a base Carrera without sports chrono and had no problem selling it ! Not essential in my opinion, but everyone has their own opinion of what is essential. They won’t be bidding you £1800 extra when you sell because it’s has chrono!

Just to throw one in there, I'd probably go for a T if you can get an allocation for one.
I had a manual in my 992.1 (which massively helped resale at the time), it was not the best box though, I expect the T will be better as its a 6 speed. Once I drove the PDK around Silverstone I was hooked though as it was so good when pushing on. My 992.2 will be more of a road trip car, interior was important and the T does not offer any of the nice leather options.
I picked up my ex demo 992.2 C2 from Solihull yesterday, a fantastic 200 mile drive home yesterday, to me it's plenty quick enough for UK roads.
I've been searching for the right spec for about 3-4 months, think I've nailed it.
sunroof
18 way seats
sport design front and skirts
sport chrono
sports exhaust
carrera classic wheels
Bose
Tinted LED's
Surround view
Lane change assist - always OFF.
Keeping to the choice of 992 model my advice for road driving is this:
Yes the S feels a bit faster than the base. (And indeed the GTS an even smaller bit faster than the S). But so what for road driving with speed limits and ever more aggressive speed enforcement? It means there is more torque available if you are not keeping the engine on the boil but need a quick burst of thrust. But it does not make the S or GTS appreciably more fun than the base Carrera. Indeed, fun can be had by having to think more about the engine speed on a base Carrera. And when you keep it on the boil it is plenty quick enough. And this does not make the S less fun to me either. Just different. And more forgiving of slightly lazy driving. Obviously the current generation of PDK means that cars with that fitted sort out the engine speed pretty quickly anyways.
The choice for me was more about how I wanted the car to look and the overall options selected. But be warned that depreciation on options is between 80% and 100% depending on what it is. But a good selection of options make the job of selling your car quicker and easier (and easier to find a dealer willing to bid) even if it does not make much difference to what they will be willing to pay you for it.
I bought preowned / "six months new", so the previous owner paid for the options for me. Thank you mate, whoever you are: you are a true scholar and gentleman the way you optioned the car! (But FYI you missed selecting Racetex sun visors and leather seatbacks to the 18-way heated and ventilated seats, which were two school-boy errors seeing as you ticked virtually every other box on the options list).

Yeah, I originally thought about a T, as I always prefer a manual. But, the long gearing is a concern.
As It's replacing the Macan and the other half needs to drive it (back from the pub) a PDK make more sense. I have a GR-Yaris for the fun stuff.
If I was able to keep the Macan then I'd probably be going T (after a Test Drive) and sell the GR-Yaris. But, I'm not in that financial position.
However, I wish I could spec the Base Carrera with the T wheels.

No discounts available on factory order cars that I am aware of, yes off stock cars especially at the start of the year.
Definitely non-trivial discounts to be had and in my experience across multiple dealership groups. not an isolated example. Lots of build slots and I experienced no funny games re discounts being conditional on add-ons. Refreshingly no hard push on (extortionate) finance or other insurance products either. Trade bids on my p/x seemed notably softer though than previous interactions so that car went to a keener independent instead.
Unless supply is cut back (unlikely) I imagine depreciation curves will look fairly brutal on most 992.2s bought at close to list, particularly heavily optioned ones. But life is short!
If this is about driving pleasure, go manual and order a T. I drove one today; the six speed box is a joy to use. I was debating between PDK vs. manual, and within minutes the T sealed the deal.
Another vote for T. Picked mine up on Saturday. Test drive one, you’ll quickly realise the horror stories of stratospheric gearing is a bit of a myth.
You can have T wheels on a standard Carrera, unless you mean the Vanadium colour. However, any dealer could have them painted for you. Our car was from stock so already spec’d. I wasn’t originally keen on the black wheel inserts, dealer said they’d happily paint them any colour I liked… for a fee.
I too have this dilemma (fortunately) so interesting reading the thread. Having got invited by Porsche to try the GTS 4 Targa (992.2) l thought even the most porky 911 felt rapid, too fast for twisty A/B roads. I also think the S will be too fast as well. My current Audi is 400PS around 1500kg and feels quick enough and goes very well. Psychologically l should be getting the S as I'm getting something more than what l currently have.
This is quite a good video from Throttle House of 992.2 choices (Carrera vs GTS vs GT3), although it does not include the S.
