Suggestion

While you're in there I recommend having the IMSB stud rotated 180 degrees which will present a new bearing surface for the balls to roll in.

Suggestion

You'll have to use heat on the nut as it's loctited but the new position of the inner race will give many more miles of service.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

I have oil around the bell housing on my 2008 Cayman S. Mechanic said that the most likely culprit is the rear main seal. Do you have any experience with oil in this same area? What was it? What did you do?

POST 2Original post

That's not uncommon and is usually the rear main seal weeping. Unless it gets too bad many people just ignore it.

POST 3Original post

Thanks. I think that I read that folks just try to hold out until they do a clutch job. The oil leak is going to bug me, but I don’t know if it’s worth almost $1,400 to mess with it.

POST 4Original post

More like $2,450, at least as of yesterday quoted by my dealer. I change the oil once a year so not worried about it or plan to do anything anytime soon.

POST 6Original post

While you're in there I recommend having the IMSB stud rotated 180 degrees which will present a new bearing surface for the balls to roll in. The pressure on the inner race of this application is all on one side and the spalling of the inner race is the first step in bearing failure. You'll have to use heat on the nut as it's loctited but the new position of the inner race will give many more miles of service. Keeping the oil level proper is of primary importance but for certain I can show you a failed IMSB and the primary wear of the races was on one side of the inner race. Probably have to loosen the chain tensioners to turn the stub, but it shouldn't affect timing of the cams as nothing is being moved except a stub shaft.
