Suggestion

It eliminates the classic "second set" that the 996 takes in cornering, where after the suspension settles, the engine settles.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Last night I installed the Function First motor mounts. The standard ones. Install took 40 minutes. 10 of that was just looking around under the car at stuff. There's how to's all over so I won't get into that. Impressions: Exhaust got quieter for some reason. It doesn't make sense to me but it did. I have some exhaust shop special Fister mods going on and I was a little disappointed when I drove it after the mounts went in. You CAN hear a little differential whine though that I never noticed before. Car feels more planted. Shifting is a tiny bit better but nothing special. Exhaust tips tucked up to where they're supposed to be so that's good. Overall I'm glad I did it for the cost/time expense but expected more out of them... maybe my factory ones weren't in that bad of shape to begin with. Tonight I put in the Function First transmission mount. Yellow street compound. Install took one hour and 5 minutes. Could knock it down to 50 on the next go round I'm sure. Impressions: Exhaust is now miraculously louder. Happy about that. Can definitely feel the vibes of the engine more through the car now... oh and the motor mounts did this also... forgot to mention it. The car feels much more planted around corners now. Shifting is again slightly better but nothing earth shattering. I use the wife test for this... if she would notice or not... and I don't think she would. Again I'm happy I did it considering the cost/time expense.

POST 2Original post

I found the motor mounts really helped to secure the engine in cornering. It eliminates the classic "second set" that the 996 takes in cornering, where after the suspension settles, the engine settles. Definitely an improvement for faster drives.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Agreed completely. On a second, longer drive today I noticed the shifting was actually quite a bit smoother. I think the wife might actually notice.

POST 4Original post

OK I am curious, how did you do the transmission mount in a couple of hours. Most of the info I have seen on these say your have to drop the trans to press out the old mount.

POST 5Original post

Those are just inserts, I think. http://www.function-first.com/produc...s-mount-insert

POST 6Original post

What year car and what mileage? Interested to know what prompted you to do this work. I am in the process of buying an '04 with 67K so considering new mounts.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

99' with just under 33k miles. Yes... function first is an insert that basically slides into the open space in the factory mount.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Just noticed one more positive with the tranny mount... if taking off from a stop in 1st gear with low rpms... before the car would vibrate a bit while it was almost bogging down (I know I know) and now it's smooth.

POST 9Original post

Do you have original and/or stock suspension? If so that is what is holding back the mounts from really shining as now that is acting somewhat as the bottleneck.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yes... original stock suspension.
